In this joseki why is move 11 played at that time and not at 12 or elsewhere? (Also why not before) Ps why does it say cannot determine the size of the image when I try to post this image using [img'][/img]?

The diagram seems to start some way into a sequence. I assume it is talking about a set of moves something like the following: (And note that neither side is playing to win, they are playing to make the problem position  )As for the answer, I think this is a way to get sente without any aji. At the end of the sequence, black fixes his shape and white has a 100% safe shape without any nasty aji in the corner. He can push and jostle a bit more, but black seems to get a chance to fight back. I'm not sure if pushing more is playable, but I think my reason for white not playing it is correct. The whole sequence is a bit strange, but you call it 'joseki'. Is that what the source says? Black's attempt to connect underneath is not usually a good idea, and I certainly can't find any pro games with this shape in. It seems more like a 'this is what one player does wrong' diagram accompanying the correct play, but I could easily be wrong

What amnal said. I have a hard time calling that "joseki". Maybe a side joseki? I doubt that, too. dailyjoseki.com doesn't find any examples of that sequence, but it's the sort of position I wouldn't expect it to find. Still, it does find three examples of the position if you don't put k3 in (though it indicates that k3 is always there when white plays h5), and in none of them does black play h2. What is your source for this? (and the other positions you've posted recently?) |
