Shi Yue strengthens his hold on the #1 position as the ratings gap between #1 and #2 widens to nearly 50 points. Gu Li moves up 2 places into #2 as Zhou Ruiyang and Chen Yaoye both drop back. The big question seems to be 17-year old Ke Jie, who jumps four places from #8 to #4 on the back of an 18-point ratings gain (best in the top 10). Will he be the next person to challenge Shi Yue at the top of the list? Meanwhile Fan Tingyu moves back into the top 10 at #8 while Lian Xiao falls out to #11.

I was thinking the same thing. However, I am not that familiar with the Chinese pros and I started thinking aren't some of the others almost as young? :scratch:

So I pulled the top 20 off of my list and found their DOB's and current ages.
    *Right now 5 of the top 20 are teenagers and Ke Jie isn't the youngest. That would be 16-year old Yang Dingxin, ranked 12th (OK, he will be 16 next Sunday).
    *Sixteen of the top 20 are 24 or under. The average age is 23!

I was looking over the Asia TV Cup games and didn't know either young Chinese player. It's crazy how deep the field is with the CCTV Cup games when the runner up Tao Xinran is 48th place and the winner Li Qincheng is 30th place in rankings.

Yes the phenomenon of a youth boom has also attracted many eyeballs in China. Most of the young pros start regular lessons at the age of 5, so when hit the year of 15, they already have 10 years of extensive training. Comparing to "mature players" these boys are more exuberant and dedicated to Go. Because of their age, most of them are single(of course) no need to worry about family affairs, girlfriend? who need a girlfriend if you aspire to be a champion. ;-) Chen Yaoye used to be the NO.1 last year but he seems had an unsuccessful romance resulted some negative impact on his competitiveness. Go is a game of concentration.

The development of Internet is also one reason, pros can easily find another pro online to play and practise. It's a perfect invention for boys who have lots of time and energy to spend, e.g. Ke Jie and Park Junghwan played lots of online games against each other.

Becoming chairman of a major corporation is a pretty good retirement plan for a professional go player. That way your company can sponsor tournaments. :) (See: CITIC Group Chairman Chang Zhenming).
