How do you find where the IP a player on KGS is based from? I didn't think it was possible.

In Sunnylucky's public information, he says that his IP is 'sino.com'. A quick check on google shows that it is based in Shanghai.

True. I made that assumption. Or, to be exact, I looked at Milkpiao's client and infered that he must be using a Taiwanese IP.

Regardless, of all of this, I could not be divulging private information even if I wanted to. I'm not a KGS admin, which is where Sunnylucky and Milkpaio play. I am a L19 admin, but they are not members here.
The comments about peoples' intenet providers is all based on PUBLIC information.

Look it up yourself if you don't believe me. But please quit making assumptions until you have the facts. BTW, one does not have to know the IP to know that they are different.

ETA: I'm still assuming we're dealing with a simple misunderstanding that Joaz looked at SunnyLucky's info, saw "Client version: Chinese (Taiwan)", and from that is saying that SunnyLucky "plays from a Taiwan IP". Which is not true, *anyone* can set their client to use that language locale. A common misconception from the fact that it puts a locale in parenthesis there.

From reading this thread, I'm pretty sure yoyoma is on the right track. Joaz probably saw the client version, and mistakenly associated it with thinking that the information was based on the user's IP address.

If this was the case, saying that the person's IP was from some location is misleading, because that information cannot be obtained by looking at the user information.

On the other hand, if Joaz truly did check their IP addresses in some way, it is somewhat odd...

I presume that you mean that this information was obtained from his email address. This does not necessarily provide information about the IP address from which the person connected to KGS.

Joaz, this is a case of getting belligerent over people not reading your mind. Imagine how easy it would have been to just say "their email/client is..." in the first post. Or when questioned, you could have said "whoops, sorry for the misunderstanding, I looked at their email/client."

I think that there was just a misunderstanding here. Now that we've come to a common understanding, there's no need for further concern, IMO...

Until proven otherwise it appears that Joaz Banbeck has conflated/confused the meaning of IP with ISP and made over-optimistic estimates about the conclusions that can be drawn from the publicly (non-kgsadmin) available KGS user information such as apparent client country and email address domain name.

A lot of the other people in the thread have shown a clearer understanding of the limits to the solid information that can be drawn from these limited facts.

Let's be nice hyperpape, name-calling is not tolerated here.

And Joaz, you really need to learn the difference between an IP and an ISP. It was due to your lack of understanding on this that caused a great deal of misunderstanding amongst L19 members. When you say you know someone's IP, people are thinking that you know their IP address (e.g, 202.186.13.4), not their ISP (e.g, Comcast). It didn't help that you were only focused on defending yourself and dragging the argument on rather than just apologizing for any confusion you've caused and ending it there.
