Murakawa Daisuke 7p beats Iyama Yuta 9p 3-2 in the Oza tournament, making a big dent in Iyama's ambition to hold all seven major titles. |

Does anyone know if the rule still stands that Murakawa now receives promotion to 8p for winning the Oza, one of the minor of the big 7 titles? |

I want to know the answer too. Murakawa Daisuke belongs to Kansai Kiin, not sure if the same promition rules apply. Last time a Kansai player won the Oza was 33 years ago by Hashimoto Shoji. |

From the GoGoD Archives: In January 2005 the Kansai Ki-in announced that it was introducing a new system of promotions effective from that date. It was virtually the same as the Nihon Ki-in system but with the following differences: •Promotion to 7-dan is also possible by winning the NHK Cup, JAL Supergo, Shinjin-O, or Kansai Ki-in First Place Championship, or by reaching the last four of a world championship. •In the number-of-career-wins category, the Kansai Ki-in First Place Championship and Samsung Cup are included as official events in place of the Ryusei and Agon-Kiriyama Cup. •Promotions under the prize-money system are limited to 4-dan to 5-dan and below, and to just one player in each category. •Promotions take effect on 1 April the following year for the career-wins and prize-money categories. (For the Nihon Ki-in the titles which will earn automatic promotions are: •To 9-dan: ◾Winning once: Kisei, Meijin, Honinbo, a world championship ◾Winning twice: Judan, Tengen, Oza, Gosei •To 8-dan: ◾Challenging or being runner-up: Kisei, Meijin, Honinbo, a world championship ◾Winning once: Judan, Tengen, Oza, Gosei •To 7-dan: ◾Challenging: Judan, Tengen, Oza, Gosei ◾Entering league: Kisei, Meijin, Honinbo ◾Winning once: Agon-Kiriyama Cup, Ryusei) The last Kansai player to win the Oza was Yamada Kimio - it just that he wasn't a member of the Kansai Ki-in. Kansai fans are lucky - they have two outfits they can support. |
