Since I don't read Korean, I can only gather that it is very cold in the tournament room - everyone is wearing an overcoat or even a blanket.

Does anyone know how Andy Liu (Liu Zhi Yuan) is doing or did do?

Fodder for Magicwand: Ryu Shikun, a former Japanese title holder, lost to a Korean amateur.

On the whole, the Japanese players are 3-2 so far.

yes, it is a known fact that Korean top amateurs are extremely strong, mostly because it is very difficult to become a Korean pro, i guess.

actually, 1st round overall statistics of amateurs vs pros seems to be 9:5 in amateurs' favour.

EDIT: in 2nd round amateurs achieved score 8:6 (if i count correctly), setting overall ballance 17:11.

Many of the Korean amateurs who do well in these tournaments are yeongusaeng (studying to become professionals), and many become professional shortly after posting good results in these tournaments. It's still remarkable that they do as well as they do, but it fits with the tendancy of some Korean professionals to do very well just after going pro.

This is Min Sangyoun's second notable result--he qualified for the main tournament of the Samsung Cup, beating Mok Jinseok on the way there, and Hane Naoki once in the tournament. He's apparently either 15 or 16, and I'd assume he'll be a pro before too long.

I'm a bit disappointed that Park Yeonghun was knocked out, I was hoping he'd do better.

After 1st round of main event, 18 Korean, 13 Chinese, and 1 Taiwanese survived.

Notable surprise: Kong Jie, Chang HaO lost. Hong MuJin(A) advanced to next round.

The next round will be played in 2/17 - 2/28.

I think Chang Hao's loss is not so much of a surprise. He has a long story as a top player, but he's fallen off quite a bit in the past year. You can see that in the Chinese pro ratings or just in his results throughout 2010.

He's 34, old enough to be past his peak as a professional, but hardly old enough that you can write him off.
