Perhaps the most striking upset so far is Suzuki Ayumi defeating Gu Lingyi, a top-class Chinese pro who has beaten players such as Gu Li, Lee Sedol+Changho, and so on. It's a pity that the SGF was not uploaded to the site. I wonder if any amateurs will pull through to the end of the prelims; only 3 remaining . |

A Japanese report suggests that Suzuki's victory over Gu Lingyi was in no way flukish. She played a well balanced game that went down to the final half point. A slight let-down was that no-one in the Jpaanese team believed her when she said she'd won! She followed that up with victory over one of the Korean 9-dans, Mun Myeong-keun. Another Japanese lady, Okuda Aya, also had a moment of glory. Kim Miri has also kept the ladies's flag flying nicely. |

A fluke implies a not-so-deserved win. The fact that no-one believed her may just be their lack of faith in her higher than expected playing form. |

Sadly, her great run came to end, losing to Heo Youngho by 2.5. |

16 players are qualified via the preliminaries 11 of them are chinese, 5 korean, no taiwanese, no japanese (though from japan Ryu Shikun and Cho Sonjin were the only 9 dan taking part). Some youngsters (fresh 1 or 2 dans) fared pretty well though. Any comments? |

I am extremely saddened that Cho Hunhyun didn't pull through, especially after beating Luo Xihe . Also, looks like no amateurs made it either. |
