Actually, can we get rid of the "likes" under the avatar altogether? It's not really that interesting of a piece of information, and you can always look it up under "Gratitudes" if you really care. And maybe change "was liked" to show up only if it's above some arbitrary threshold (like five or ten), so we can still identify those people who are significant contributors, but those of us who, uh, aren't as likable don't have to be reminded of it every time we see one of our posts.

Maybe this is a bit ambitious, but how about we keep the gratitude idea, but implement the reputation system that stackoverflow uses? I'm sure we could come up with interesting and both forum + Go-related badges :).

You make a good point here. Actually I would also prefer this, but since there some people who like this feature, I didn't want to come up with such a radical solution. A compromise would be to switch it off by default, and those who like it, can switch it on.

I'd say just have an option to turn it off from the viewer's side. That way, people like me who are amused by the system, can leave it on and see it on everyone's.

Not sure if that's what you meant by an option to toggle it, but if so, high-five?

No, I would like to keep control of what is visible in my profile.

Why does clicking the "likes" button send a "thank you for the message" -message without telling which message it was, to the writer of the "liked" post?

How about displaying the total number of likes in the Gratitudes link on the top-right? Similar to 0 new messages.
And perhaps make it bold if it recently(since the last login perhaps?) increased.

None of the posts in the Best version of linux thread can be liked. There is no like button. I want to like.

I see a button in every post of that thread.

Strange, I only get one button. The one for "Report this post" but not the like button. Tested in both IE and FF. I see the like button in other threads.

That works very well for a programming advice site, where you don't know if the other guy really knows what he is talking about until you see his rep. But we already have a reputation system. It is called rank. ( True, people can lie about that, but they would get called out rather soon if they started offering lots of bad advice )

I also get a few buttons with moderator things on, but no "like" button for that thread. They appear disabled for all "Off Topic" threads.

Spot on!
Please enable the like feature for the off topic section too.

I totally agree with the decision to not have 'like' on off-topic. Right now someone can make the off-hand political, religious, or operating system statement and it will pass by.

But if 12 similarly-minded people 'like' it, it will call for a response from the opposition who will then get 15 'likes' and the battle will be on.

Sounds like a fun time to me for those involved. Why not let it happen?

Echoing wms, what's wrong with that? Do we always have to tiptoe around controversial issues?
