If I may advocate in this thread, there are a couple of rationales I have for recommending EidoGo: 1) It's pure Javascript, so it will work on things like Smartphones and iPads that don't have flash. 2) It will work better than flash on non-Windows platforms where flash is unstable and a CPU/memory hog. 3) It's open source, so anyone can add features to it. |

While I like eidogo in theory, I've often had problems with it, especially when it's embedded in pages. The stones don't appear on the board, things like that. And sometimes using the arrow keys to go through the game don't work. I hate having to click through every move of a game. (And before people ask why don't I use the mouse wheel: No mouse wheel on a laptop.) |

The problem with the invisible stones has a fix, and the arrow key thing is a configuration option (it takes a little bit more work to make the arrow keys work - you have to embed it in an iframe to keep it from interfering with the browser's interface). I've got lots of experience with it, and have written some enhancements to the player, so if there are other issues that you have, I can probably fix them. |

I vote for Eidogo for the following reasons: 1) Flashgoban's variations are clunkier to play out. 2) Flashgoban uses flash, which is exclusively proprietary software, whereas eidogo is implemented in Javascript. 3) Eidogo is open source, meaning in theory that we could expand it to fit our needs on this forum and even have the changes implemented in the main trunk. |

There a lot of interesting things that could be done (with some work.) Imagine having an in-browser SGF and/or diagram editor available while writing up your posts. Or a position search feature integrated into the forum to find posts with diagrams or SGF files that match a board position. |

Fwiffo is going to try to implement eidogo so we can see what it will be like in comparison. |

The current problems arise from depending on single-source software that we don't control. If Don doesn't cooperate, we were screwed. Now we are considering depending on Flash, which is another closed and single-source piece of software that we don't control. Eidogo is open source. I vote for it. |

And should definitely make the entire mobile user crowd happy. No more restrictions because of flash problems (or lack of flash on whatever device you're using). |

I am using my Android phone more frequently to view this site and even though Android will eventually support flash, I would be very happy to never install it. |

I don't know what the difference between those is, but I do hope that whatever widget is used there will be a link to download the sgf--I don't have Flash on my main browser and have always relied on an external program to look at embedded games. |

I'd be more than happy to use eidogo if those are fixed. |

I had difficulties in making flash work properly on some Linux machines, so I vote Eidogo. |

I'm working on EidoGo today, I hope to have something to look at by this evening. Quick question for forum members: Do you prefer the "full" eidogo layout (like this) or "compact" layout (like this)? Technically there's no reason we can't have both, but I just wanted to take the temperature on this... EidoGo also has a problem mode, though I probably won't have that in the initial rollout, but will add it if there is interest. |

I prefer compact. |

Post subject: | Re: SGF VIEWER FLASHGOBAN Or EIDOGO |
I think the compact is better for inline games... |

Post subject: | Re: SGF VIEWER FLASHGOBAN Or EIDOGO |
I agree. Compact would be preferable when posting the games in forum threads/posts. |

I like full better, especially for the variation tree. Also more room to see sgf comments. |
