like that. the topic serves no purpose but to pass around likes (which is already a bad idea but i wont get into that) and to inflate post count. though was off-topic posts already turned off? yes theres a similar topic but it hasnt reached that low of a level yet. it still serves little purpose.

what needs to be done is that a spam forum should be added, where people who are into not contributing anything at all can have their little fun (and post count would not increase of course) while off topic should contain posts with actual use and discussion.

alternatively, set some regulation on the forum.

This really comes down to what you expect out of the forum, and pieces of information like "post count". Personally, I agree with this, but I do come from a much more strict (structured) forum experience in my past where post counts actually came with some benefits (custom avatar was a reward once you reached a certain number of posts, and you could get warned (and even eventually banned) for posting too much spam just to raise your post count).

It is all a matter of perspective. Here, the post count is a fun piece of information, I just try to not get too worked up about it. It will be interesting to see what other people think.

I think that thread is more interesting and useful than this thread. :-P Why so much whining over silly things like post counts or "like"s? I've seen far more playful behavior with both statistics on other forums with nary a peep from complainers, unlike what I've seen on this forum. What's the deal?

i suggested a forum for those of you who dont like contributing and instead play childish games. and as ive said many times before, the like system is not used for its original intent, instead its just become another reason to spreads kudos around the clique for "funny" comments.

other forums that could see posts not counting would be the malkovich forums. i think magicwand is a good example of this. 800 post, at least 628 in the 1-1 malkovich forum, and really, whats he contributing besides playing a lot of malkovich games at once?

can you define contribution? if there aren't any people who enjoy my game i am willing to stop.
BUT! remember the reason why i play this game? i want people to learn how 3D plays the game.
in my opinion that is contribution enough.

This is kind of offensive. Why do you care so much? Last I checked, Araban has the most likes. Fitting, considering how helpful he is, no? Magicwand is one of the most active people on the forum, so it's only fitting he have a lot of posts. Sure, 'like' is used for things besides go instruction. If people are very nice to you or otherwise make you smile, it's worth giving a 'thumbs up'. You, on the other hand, have few posts and few likes. Why? You're rarely active here, and the last two times I remember you 'contributing', you were just trolling with INTERNETRAGE.

well, clicking the "like" button does absolutely nothing to increase ones post count

and posting one's 100th post in that thread as the original poster suggested, only increases one's post count by... wait for it... one.

its already in the Off Topic forum, which is already designed for non-Go related talk (and perhaps a little light hearted fun).

seems like that's so much more interesting stuff to complain about

if there's any threads designed to increase one's post count, it would be the Malkovich games. I might dislike those threads for that one reason alone. (the other reason might be the hide tags, I really hate those too). Otherwise, the Malkovich threads are quite useful and enjoyable.

but the thing that most irritates me are the poll threads -- why does every new question thread have to be a poll? Let's take a poll about it, eh?

I usually ignore almost everything in the Off Topic forum. I suggest you might try that too :)

As I've said before, the only purpose of the "like" system is to decrease the vertical screen real estate taken up by posts that say nothing but "+1" or "QFT". So far I haven't seen anyone offer evidence that the "original intent" is a anything but, and it seems to be working perfectly fine in that regard, both in this forum and in the off-topic forum.

Again, why are you getting so worked up about this? Why should the "Number of Posts" statistic reflect some subjective quality like how much someone has contributed to a forum (and who's to say that you and I having this discussion somehow "contributes" more than well-thought-out malkovich posts?) instead of reflecting the actual number of posts that person has made, whether they were one-liners or dozens of paragraphs or well-thought-out or rambling nonsense or any number of other things a post could be? After all, it's called "Number of Posts", not any of those other things.

now, that was an annoying thread!

yes but how helpful are you being when half of your moves have no comment and even so, half of the rest make a random comment about something unrelated or a quip about "this will be easy, opponent is bad"

i bolded the error in your statement. thats misusing the like system. there is a reason joaz wanted it off in the off-topic forum you know.

araban is an exception because he actualkly contributes a lot, but im sure even then he has more than he should have. i took the liberty of searching other users who have a lot of likes.

HKA - 51 likes and i only see maybe 1 post that deserves likes, out of 13 posts that have likes.

wms - ok there are obvious reasons he gets a lot of likes but still no real contributions to the forum from the posts that have likes

topazg does better but still some posts that arent contributing anything, same with joaz

that was just some quick skimming cause i got bored.

What is your problem? It's so absurdly easy to ignore forum threads that don't interest you. And, judging by
the view count, you are in a minority.

Judging the "original intent", i doubt Joaz cares as much about it as you do.

You almost make me want a dislike button.

xDragon you're being ridiculous. For one, who cares about post count? What's the big deal if Magicwand has 800 or 5800 post counts? It's a trivial number.

Secondly, there is no requirement in the off-topic section for all posts to contribute, it's just a place to talk about things unrelated to Go. And "perhaps a little light-hearted fun"? The whole point is to have fun, you seem to be forgetting this is a game forum.

Thirdly, complain about the "like" feature all you want, but who are you to judge how many likes a person deserves or what posts are undeserving of a like? As far as I'm aware you didn't build the feature, so it's out of your place to decide how it should be used.

Lastly, I find it oddly humorous that you of all people would complain about contributions when so far all you've been doing is trolling. Keep it up so you can add one more to your bucket of complaints: not being able to access the forum altogether.

why does that thread need to exist? "post your 100th in here!". useless. i see off topic forum as somewhere to discuss things not related to go, not to act like children. thus, adding an extra forum for those things.

is there a pressing need for people to spam those posts? seems like some people get too eager to please others.

its just to reduce overinflated post counts and can help determine how much people actually contribute to the forum rather than how many times they can post "lol"

I actually find Magicwand's playing quite instructive. But I think his comments/statements are directed at about my level. At 9k I imagine they would be quite cryptic.

As for likes, I click the like button on posts I really like... if it is meant for something else, it should be called something else. (Like "Teacher points" or something.)

a dislike button would be useful. for me at least. a forum i went to a couple years ago had one, but removed it for some silly reason.

i know when i go to a new forum i look for the people who have high post counts and check them out.
