Honestly, I would just like some clarity on it and figured a poll would be the best way.

If you vote, please state your reasoning why you voted as you did.

I'm in favor of it, because I believe it has just as valid of a reason for existing as the Kaya subforum does.

Happy voting!

I voted no because I believe there are already way too many sub-forums, which I would solve by combining them. I don't think it would be too awkward to have a single Internet Server forum, where users give appropriate titles like "Nova - Where is everybody?" or "KGS - does the new Java fix my sound?" Or "NNGS - those were the days."

Not a bad car, the Nova. I hear that it did not sell well in Mexico, though. No va.

See, that's an invalid argument. I don't think kaya deserves its own subforum.

I like wineandgolover's idea. Just a single server subforum with the appropriate server in the title of threads.

I am in favour of giving Nova the same number of subforums as Kaya, provided that number is 0 or 1.

That's where I was going. If NOVA isn't getting its own subforum, then the Kaya subforum should go or get merged.

I'd like to point out that numerically the kaya subforum has more posts than the tygem and wbaduk subforums combined. So it's not exactly an obscure forgotten subforum which needs pruning.

That could be attributed to the fact that the subforum has followed Kaya throughout its life cycle, so everything from "Welcome to Kaya" to "Why is no one on Kaya" will be there.

And where are the numerous posts following the life cycle of nova?

As long as a substantial minority of members want a particular subforum, why not? :)

Exactly my point, Bill. You need numbers to justify a subforum.

My impression is that forums and subforums are more useful to less frequent visitors, as I think most people who visit regularly and frequently use 'View Unread Posts'. Following that, the question becomes 'will less frequent visitors come here specifically to discuss nova so that we should create a subforum for it?'

I have shifted my hopes for a decent, nice looking go server from kaya to NOVA, the only Go server where we see active development. So yes, sure, why not!?

The way I am using L19x19, a new subforum only has pros, no cons.

In my opinion each server (or other smaller topic in general) having its own subforum mostly serves to limit discussion more than benefits from having its "own corner". The few people frequenting those forums will be able to chat in peace, sure, but other people who would be interested in the same topics would miss them altogether. I.e. in General Discussion you might click on topics you didn't have in mind when coming to browse L19x19, but if you never check e.g. Tygem subforum you'll miss an interesting topic there, which could be relevant also in broader scope.

If I was made the king  of L19x19 for a day, I would:
* Merge all go server subforums into one (possibly keeping Turn Based separate, like now)
* Remove Ride share to tournaments
* Merge Amateurs and Beginners subforums (Study Group serving as the more advanced version)

Having a bit more dynamic content/pacing in the forums might actually liven up this whole place a bit.

There are good reasons that there's more than one way to browse the forums. In discussions like this in the past, it has turned out that a lot of people (myself included) tend to use the 'view new posts' link at the top for general browsing. Try it - it sounds a lot like your ideal L19. On the other hand, the fine division of subforums we have allows you to easily find threads you can remember the gist of, but not the title. Proposing a heavy merge of subforums is like asking to remove functionality. For that reason - while I don't personally care whether Kaya and Nova share a subforum or not - I'm actually going to vote that Nova should have its own.

I tend to agree with this

Also the thread is only half a year old and already got half as much posts as the wbaduk forum

Of course, when a particular topic creates enough discussion that it warrants its own subforum, one should be created. One thread just isn't enough - it fits perfectly well with other topics in the relevant section of the forum.

And regarding the using of new posts: If we assume that Pareto principle applies (here it would mean that ~80% of posts are made by ~20% of users), that most likely would mean that the active users - those who use the new posts -function to keep track of daily updates, are a minority of the people reading these forums. There are still lots of people who never post or are not even registered.

In any case, looking at this in the long run, in my opinion having a more dynamic and active forum far outweighs any potential (imo: very small) benefits of having a greater number of inactive/tiny subforums, which we can see even now are very stagnant, with barely a couple of topics with any activity. I just think it's sad to see sections of a forum die. But granted, I also see the point people above me are making, and in either direction will have little to no impact on myself, so please take my view as mostly personal rambling.
