This is what I played, to steal the eye, but now I don't want to take gote to keep that stone alive.

Maybe you just extend along the side like if white had played your move like he was supposed to first and treat this exchange lightly cause it already kind of cramps him?

This is a good result and is the standard explanation for why White can't descend immediately at 8 in your original diagram. Your decision to slide into the corner was good.
