As far as I know, this is still a very "standard" opening, typical for (especially Korean and Chinese) pro-play of the last 15-20 years. Your move is quite normal, but so is a two-space extension. Even tenuki is not unthinkable - for example, the continuation below might be interesting too. White has a lot of potential and his single stone on the left still has much aji; black, on the other hand, feels a bit cramped onto the right side of the board, though he does have a strong position there.

By the way, I don't see the need for hide tags (except in the case of lengthy analyses with a few diagrammes, where you want to cut down on cluttering) so I didn't use them. If anyone really prefers to have them, please say so and I'll change it!

OK. Given that the plan is to tenuki, you will later want to set the marked stone into motion. An exchange like this 1/2 will give you some extra aji to work with later on. Perhaps an interesting bonus?

Even so, white still has gained the option of moving at one of the points 'a' to improve his base somewhat. Is this worth the territorial loss? My gut feeling says it probably is worth it, but I am definitely not sure.

I would love some high-dan feedback on this plan. I wonder if it all makes sense!

yes i am predicting moves for a game i am uploading but i am not looking at the next moves so if you see my previous predictions they were wrong so. yeah i am keeping the game fair

If Black plays o16 then a move on the top becomes more urgent. Playing o17 means that Black can happily switch elsewhere (after the local position is settled). My guess is that Black wants to return to the bottom left as soon as possible. Because the top left will be solid (third line) White's next move there is less big if black gets gote in the bottom left.

I think what's being said is that after 1-4, Black really wants to play near a to avoid being undercut. But on this board a play near b, c and d are desirable, so Black wants sente. With :B1: in its actual location, a play at a is unnecessary (and pointless in fact).

Of course, I'm not confident enough to say for sure that this is the issue.
