Update 16th June 2010
We're going to be meeting this weekend, at...
UTC: Sat 20:00-23:00
Europe: Sat 22:00-01:00
US-East: Sat 16:00-19:00
US-West: Sat 13:00-16:00
NZ: Sun 08:00-11:00
In the godiscussions room on KGS.

Bring your 5 favorite tsumego from the past week to share! We'll also discuss our planning for our tournaments and other events.

Original Post:

I'm thinking

>Weekly meetings on KGS

>Fortnightly tournament

My ideas;
I think a good activity for weekly meetings; we each pick 5 favorites of the tsumego we've done that week and set them up for the others to try (5 tsumego is more of a sample or advertisement than a copyright infringement, I'm sure).
Also; members please suggest preferred/possible times for the meeting.

Fortnightly(?) tournament;
My idea is a single-elimination tournament, ideally started and finished around every other weekend. A good 'prize' if the mods could sort it out- a custom title on the forum (instead of dies in gote or whatnot), held only until the next tournament is won. I'm not sure whether playing evenly or with KGS handicap is more appropriate.

What's everyone else thinking?

Sounds good!

Friday evenings (Pacific timezone) would be best for me, but that's pretty flexible. I would suggest handicap games as most of us are around 5k and we would play even games anyway, but with handicaps there's room for stronger or weaker players to join in and have a good chance. I doubt sandbagging will be much of an issue here.

I'm looking forward to this. :D

I joined the group, but I can't promise that I can commit time to it right now. My life is just too screwed up. I haven't had time to play or do problems or anything hardly at all lately. I wanted to join the L19 title tournament, but I probably don't have time for that either.

I would be interested, although I'm a couple of stones weaker than you guys, and I only want to be 1 dan some day, I have no illusions of it happening during 2010.

All right, I'm in, too =)

Friday evening is good for me (6pm GMT+1/UTC+1 ?). And I'm pro handicap-stones, because I need to learn to attack properly =D

If this isn't a time-limited thing I'll probably want to join this in a few weeks. The 2010 thing sounds a bit over-ambitious to me (at least for me), but I suppose it's good to be optimistic :).

It a bit too ambitious for me. I really doubt I'll make dan this year. But doing go problems with you guys from time to time would be ok.

Well, even if I had the time to really buckle down, I know 1 dan in 2010 isn't realistic. Maybe 1k, probably 2k is a reasonable goal. But I didn't pick the name of the group. :-)

Hmm, this is a bit difficult as a lot of us are in different timezones. I'm in GMT-8. Oh well, I'm sure we can all work something out later. Maybe, if enough people join, we could have two different groups based on timezones, like the KGS Plus tournaments.

I would like to join you but unfortunately I don't have the time for it :(

Setting a goal like that will surely give some motivation to study.

But keep in mind that there is also a drawback. In your normal kgs games, you will try to play moves that you are more or less sure about because you will be more afraid of losing the game. That's a normal thing but this psychology will prevent you from experimenting with seemingly strange moves. In that sense, I am not sure whether setting a goal like that is really something useful.

But anyway, there is good chance that I am wrong.
(One of my favourite magicwand phrases: I may be wrong but I am probably right)

Enjoy the practise! If most of you reach shodan this year, I will consider creating a 2011 group next year.

Do you have your own KGS room? That's probably worth doing too I would have thought

Something that needs to be gotten over, definitely. I know I used to feel like this when I was striving for a new rank ... I don't anymore. If I lose, I lose ... and I try to learn something from it. Besides, games are more interesting if you step outside your comfort zone, and you learn how to deal with a larger range of situation s on the board.

Oh yeah, and I've joined the group.

As far as I know, this thread is all we have so far, but stay tuned :D

Interesting point. Personally I am not too bothered, but I suppose a way to solve this issue would be by balancing ranked games with free games on KGS.

Perhaps the GD/L19 room could suffice, but getting our own room is definitely worth considering, especially if we get more people interested.

I don't think it needs its own room. It's not like the GD/L19 room is overflowing with chatter.

Very interested in this so I subscribed. My next goal is to become a 1D on KGS (3k actually) at the end of the year :D (maybe harder than I thought but I'll try till the end !)

Nice to meet you all

I am not sure of how much time I can give. This time is probably good for me, too (7pm EET DST - 6pm CET DST).
