The lecture series is in Korean. There are 20 in this series.

Some of the Korean terms.

Poh-Seok = Fuseki
Jeong-Seok = Joseki

Anyone familiar with Korean ranks know what a Korean 1k translates to AGA/EGF rank?

It's ambiguous, even today, I think. Some people that say they're 1 gup probably have a rank that's similar to AGA or EGF. Other people are referring to a rank that is much stronger.

Awhile ago when I was in Korea, someone asked me my rank at a go event. I told him I was 2k, and he said something that probably translates to "Oh, you're going to become a pro, aren't you?". Of course, he could have simply been displaying some exaggerated courtesy.

I would say somewhere around AGA 2-4dan. But, in Ki-Won, it is customary and proper to say "I'm 1 keup" when asked if you rank around AGA 6-9dan. Amateur dan rating is given out by Korean Ki-Won as a certification. If you ask someone on the street, he will say he is 1 keup when his strength is at AGA 9d level. :)

I saw this guy say he was 1 keup and he was playing even with my teacher AGA 7dan. :)

Are these completely worthless to you without English words?

There was an interesting topic on Joseki for Thick. It covers the difference between influence Joseki vs thick Joseki. It covers how thick joseki can turn into over concentrated. It would have been good if it had subtitle for non Korean speaking audience.

Yes. But after looking at a couple, I'm not sure they'd be more useful with English words. Unless the narration contains a lot of deep thoughts that aren't showing up in the variations being shown, what I'm getting here is that there isn't a lot expected of a Korean 1kyu from a theory or strategy persective. I don't mean to put anyone through the effort of providing a full translations, but for those who understand spoken Korean, can you share a couple of short concepts or ideas that might be in these videos that are not typically related in books available in English?

For context, I own some Korean books and it is easier for me to follow the Korean text than voice videos in general. I have also seen some Korean videos from KBS and Baduk TV that are a bit easier to follow than this series, because the voice inflection for this speaker gives fewer clues as to his opinion of a position.

I don't mean to insult the series and I thank you for sharing it. My mind is open to the possibility that I may be missing a lot of insight from the narrative, though I'd like some evidence of that.

He is deliberately using easy joseki to prove a point that you do not need to know gazillion joseki to be a 1keup. He says that it is merely knowing but applying which joseki makes you 1k, 5k or even 9k.

The later videos go little more as first 3 are more like an intro.

These are mostly targeting Korean audience who are known to not study but prefer street baduk. :) I must say Korean baduk books do not sell much compare to western go followers.

video 1 stresses "sun-soo" = sente in joseki.

Hoo-soo = gote soo means move

Myo-soo = tesuji
