One of the more inspirational books I read was "Killer go" (I think) by Kato or at least on his behalf. "Kato the killer" has quite a distinct style indeed. I don't know if that is or was romanticism but it appears to me that in those days, it was easier to identify the players in the field: territorial Cho, cosmic Takemiya, stylish Otake, tenacious Rin, inventive Kobayashi ... and Kato the killer, going for all-out fights if the opportunity presented itself, often creating that opportunity by putting pressure on the opponent, daring them to play elsewhere and then go for the kill. The style is more clearly inimitable, evidently relying on tactics and reading, while we know that's actually true for any style and merely making big moyos was not really playing cosmic go. Anyway, now that I've gone back to more reading and embracing fighting, this is a welcome source. Thanks! Edit: the book I referred to is actually "Killer of Go" by Sakata Eio. https://senseis.xmp.net/?KillerOfGo |
