Heyho!

I'm thinking about making a list of Go books to eventually find them under the christmas tree.
I'm considering:

  • Yi Chang'ho's six Tesuji books (complete because of the shipping costs)
  • (The) Gokyo Shumyo
  • Get Strong at the Opening
  • Get Strong at Attacking
  • Get Strong at Invading
  • Fundamental Principles of Go

Realistically, Santa might carry three of those in his sack. So, what do you think are the most useful or did I miss something even more important?

I'm weak 3-kyu on KGS and already have these books:
  • Graded Go Problems for Beginners - complete (worked through multiple times except the last 50 out of Vol. 4)
  • Get Strong at Tesuji (worked through multiple times)
  • 501 Tesuji Problems (started but were too challenging)
  • Making Good Shape (started but didn't like it much)
  • 1001 Life-and-Death Problems (worked through)
  • Intermediate Level Problems (didn't start yet)
  • Rescue and Capture (didn't start yet)
  • Attack and Defense (worked through)
  • Tesuji (worked through)
  • Opening Theory Made Easy (worked through)
  • 38 Basic Josekis (took a sniff)
  • Positional Judgment (didn't start yet)
  • After Joseki (took a sniff)
  • Direction of Play (worked through)
  • Reducing Territorial Frameworks (took a sniff)
  • Second Book of Go (still in plastic)
  • Invincible (took a sniff)

 You are missing:

The GoGod CD (the winter 2010 version off course)
Joseki 1: The Fundamentals (although not everybody likes it)
Get strong at KO (If you don't know Ko, don't play go) :grumpy: (That means i should find something else)

Hirako no go no 1- 21 (To have something no go)

Yeah, I always pondered (weak and weary) if I should buy GoGoD, but then again: I forgot to mention, I own "Invincible" and never manage to get over more than three games. I read the bibliographical part and the "stories" but I never had the staying power of going through the games.

Of course Ko can be a major part in the game, but I kind of think, it's like reading something about endgame. Useful, of course but if you follow some basic principles, you'll get along quite fine and can concentrate on even more important parts.

I once spend several hundred of euros on a Manga series, I don't think I'll do this again ^^ Besides, the Anime is far more entertaining with scenes, where some professional suddenly puts a stone in Atari and the close-up of the opponent shows a shocked face like the world got just torn apart =D

I'd suggest either GoGod, or an iPad with SmartGo Kifu (yea, that's a bit more expensive...)

SmartGo (for PC) and GoGoD together are great for database search. GoGoD itself is great for articles.

For books, I recommend any of Fairbairn's works like Kamakura and Go Consultants. I have Final Summit as well, but still working through Kamakura right now.

What does your game say? What's causing difficulty or discomfort?

Hm, I'd say concentration, tactic, strategy and creativity ^^

Hi Sodesune

Did Santa bring any of the books you wanted?

Good luck with your Go endeavours in the new year
