Post subject:  Go playing software for Ubuntu
I recently installed Ubuntu OS on my PC and I would like to know what would be a suitable Go playing program for it. I seek one with a maximum difficulty level of amateur 1 or 2 dan. Much obliged in advance.

"gogui" is a java gui into which you can plug gtp-bots.

Three popular opensource gtp-bots include "gnugo", "fuego" and "pachi".
It helps if you know how to compile stuff on your own. (That mostly means typing "./configure && make" into a console, but you'll probably also need to install some missing dev-libs, so you need to know how to use aptitude, or whatever Ubuntu uses for a package manager.)


On 9x9, imho, the last two (being MCTS bots) are beyond KGS 2d on my hardware (AMD Phenon II X4 940 3ghz with ~3gb RAM).

Describe hardware (just CPU as none of these are seriously memory intensive). To play 19x19 at 1-2 dan requires use of a MCTS based evaluator and these are CPU intensive (they are all a serious "crunch"). Of course if "real time" playing speed is not an issue, then hardware unimportant.

I don't know what GNU Go's rank is these days but you can play it via qGo (or any other clients). qGo has support for various Go programs, too.

I like older versions of qGo, such as 1.5. They did a recent UI overhaul which is a little confusing to me. The aesthetic definitely changed as well.

I used Quarry. It is the program manager and it come with Gnu 3.8.

I *just* started using Quarry today. I like it much better than the overhauled qGo interface. The only difference is that Quarry can't connect to networks.

I've been working tsumego this morning in Quarry and it's been wonderful.
