Hello all,
Just wondering if anyone has pdfs (or other shareable copies) of some early computer go research or any early AGA publications. In particular, I am looking for:
"13 Line Go", by Gilbert Rosenthal (1954)
"How To Play Go", by Takagawa Kaku, published by the AGA in 1958
"The Vital Points of Go", also by Takagawa, published by the AGA in 1958
"Simulation of a Learning Machine for Playing Go", by H. Remus (1962)
And any other early works!

ps if I could add: does anyone have a copy of the Olmsted-Robinson article "A treatise on the rules of go" from Go Monthly Review, volume 4, issue 9?

I've uploaded a copy of the Remus paper, republished in Go Monthly Review. It can be accessed via http://www.britgo.org/computergo/history

I have a poor copy of Zobrist's original paper also.

A paper I wrote in October 1972 has a bibliography which might be of historic interest.

Could I ask what is the motivation for your asking for the requested items?

Thank you Jon!! I've recently begun my master's degree in Computer Science and would like to see how far along I can get in putting together a comprehensive collection of significant computer go research. This is primarily for me, so I have a clear idea of what has already been done before I push forth with my own computer go ideas/research. If I can do a quality job of compiling/assimilating whats been done, I'd also like to see about publishing an up-to-date annotated bibliography of computer go research. I would be very interested in communicating some more, as it seems you may have great insight into the early days of computer go. Perhaps we could correspond more in depth via email? Thanks again,

You are asking for copyright violation.

I do not know the first of the two, but the second is hardly suitable for computer go research and the contents is much better treated in newer texts.

Thank you Robert for your contribution to the go community - I have read and followed much of your writing, and surely will continue to...

I am not "asking" for copyright violation - I asked for shareable copies. If they are not available, or not to be shared, then a link to where I can purchase them is quite acceptable. Thank you, but looks like we can all be a bit more care with words.

Regarding the 'hardly suitable' comment: surely my interests (as do most people's) go beyond strictly 'computer go' writings. Historical context is a fascinating and oftentimes illuminating dimension to consider during research. The Takagawa books are cited often in early computer go papers and so I am interested to see these works myself, regardless of their ultimate value.

The best you can do is watching Ebay or Amazon or ask, e.g., here in the Go Books forum for printed, used copies. But frankly, your money is better spent on newer books or Takagawa's games, unless you are a die hard collector of old books.

Here's the newest one that has me searching obsessively:

D. Lefkovitz, A strategic pattern recognition program for the game of Go, University of Pennsylvania, The Moore School of Electrical Engineering,Wright Air Development Division, Technical Note 60-243, 1–92, 1960.

I've attempted contact with Dr. Lefkovitz directly, but have not heard back yet. It is an often cited work - perhaps a friendly soul has a copy out there?

When you see some such reference to an article in a science journal, you can, in principle, visit the library of a suitable university faculty, where there might be the journal.

I have a copy of "GO!", which contains the 1977 edition of "How to play go" and 1958 edition of "The Vital Points of Go"; Copyright Sabaki Go Company 1982. I may consider selling it. Please PM me if you are interested.

However, AFAIK neither book has nothing to do with computer go.
