Let's anthropomorphize Alphago / Talk about artificial intelligence. Alphago has got a very good intuition and is quite quick at reading (reasoning). What is missing? We have got now intuition and reason. Not bad. Only one step is missing ![]() Is consciousness in humans a necessary link between intuition and reason? Or is consciousness just the intuition of oneself? How far is artifical consciousness off? Our brain plays go with our body in the "real world" making sure it is alive and not dead by increasing its potential/stability ![]() Perhaps I should read some Kant. |

Let us train a neural network on examples of selfawarness. ![]() Damn, we have not a large enough dataset! ![]() Perhaps Google has got one. |

Well, a lot of what AlphaGo does is analogous to what humans do unconsciously. And in humans conscious experience takes a while, like a second or two, to form. Does AlphaGo do anything analogous to that? It doesn't need to, does it? ![]() |

Besides, you have opened a philosophical can of worms. You might have concluded that YOU are conscious*. But how would you determine that for some other? Other human? Other animal? Or an AI? What observations might you make to help you make that decision. This isn't as simple as it looks. For example, you could ask that other person "are you conscious?" but what could you make of the answer whether yes or no. Does the animla's inability to conmprehend your question mean anything one wa or the other? And I assure you I could design a program that would answer "yes" to that query. And even considering yourself, how could you be SURE? Sure that not just a "dream" << and since go is a game of Chinese origin ..... how do you know the fish are enjoying themselves? (the problem not just worried about in Western philosophy). * and what exactly does that mean? |

But you are missing one of the most useful news sources on the web. |
