For better or worse I'm going to be playing most machine games on an iPad.

Can you tell me which iPad Go app will give me the strongest most human-like game ?

If I had to choose between strength and style I think the latter would be a more important feature for me right now.

many thanks,

I would say Dragon Go Server and Tetsuki to add to the previous response. :)

No need to. In KGS there are plenty of people just starting and knowing close to nothing more than the rules. Just play! I know losing is horrible, and not knowing what you do is worse... But you have to get over it because losing and not knowing what you do will be with you for all of your go career (or at least until ~5k where I am, others better ranked can say if they agree)

Besides, you have the opportunity to review the game with your opponent, if you play humans.

I've always gotten the impression on here that IGS (i.e. Tetsuki) should be the last place I go as a raw beginner given the altogether Beginner Class and abundance of sandbaggers.

But I'd definitely second Dragon Go Server. Sign on as a 30k and you'll get plenty of games with other people your level.

I don't think a beginner would enjoy DGS. After all, between 30k and 15k you can bump 2 stones in a matter of days, a game you start today against a 30k as a 30k can end up as a struggle between 15k in 1 month, both trying to recover horrible blunders they made at the beginning

It depends on activity, Boidhre and I finished a game in a few days. I have trouble finding a full hour or so to play a real game in a day but I can find enough breaks to get the moves done. Then we reviewed on KGS.

Yup, but you need to find quick players there, I usually can give 15-20 moves in a streak but then stop for a few hours. There are players who move once a day, or twice a day...

You find fast players though. I'm playing one guy under two days and we're already on move 116 (we happen to have free time around the same time it seems). Sure there a few other games I started at the same time that aren't even 10 moves in yet but most are in the 30s but, one other is near 100 moves in and two are around the 70 mark. That's fast enough for it to be interesting.

I just played CrazyStone and a game on Tetsuki. Is there an iPad client for DGS ? couldn't find one and don't want to see what a phone app would look like on a tablet.

Eventually I'll just play on KGS using an old linux laptop - unless I win a lottery then I'd buy an Android tablet just for KGS :salute:

I don't think there's a specific app for DGS on the ipad, but at least on android tablets, I've used the web interface and have had no problems. It only really makes a difference on phone sized screens in my opinion.

I was considering getting the AlwaysOnPc app for this reason but I'm not sure what it really looks like on an iPad. I don't want to use the native browser at all - too paranoid for that!

That is quite a high level of paranoia. :)

There's a free iPhone app for DGS that you can use on an iPad. It's serviceable, though obviously not as pretty as a proper tablet app. The webpage is here: http://dgs.uberweiss.net/

I'd rather trust Safari connecting directly to servers than a 3rd party app running on two devices with a Wifi connection in the middle...

DGS works perfect in Mobile Safari for iPad, but there's a free app for iPhone and iPod touches that makes for a nicer experience in such a small screen.

I could be wrong but I think you can get rooted by clicking on one bad link or even by loading a commercial news site that has a compromised ad appearing on their page.

The latest roots have been caused by specially crafted PDFs, and there are no PDF ads (as far as I know). You can always reinstall everything in your iPad every week, in case you are really worried. Nothing prevents a 3rd party app of being rooted, or showing ads just like Safari does.

Personally, I prefer (Online-Go-Server) OGS to DGS. OGS is a lot faster because you can set up conditional moves. There are also a lot of other "activities" with regular tournaments, mini-tournaments, and ladders. So you can always get even games with stronger players to practice.
In general, I have a low tolerance for these slow games, so OGS keeps me a little more active than DGS.
There is an OGS ap for iphone/ipod, but I am not sure about the iPad. I am going to buy one next week, so maybe I will let you know then.
