I plan on going to NYC soon and I want to bring my go board BUT I dont want to pay 125 for the new GoBox. Does anyone know where I can get the original GoBox or some alternative. Or some instructions on how to make your own. I have a Floor goban so I need a case that can fit a smaller one. Like the one on YMI.

Thanks :batman:

How long will you be here in NYC? Unless it is semi-permanent, I would strongly suggest you consider not bringing it. There is real possibility it will get damaged in transit--no matter how good I pack, something is almost always broken on long trips (if nothing else, a zipper, strap, or wheel on the luggage).

I plan on staying with my friend a week or two but we both play go and I am driving up there so there is little change that the case would break.

Oh, okay. For some reason I thought you were flying.

If it were me, I'd use a cardboard box with some padding.

I was thinking normal packing materials (air pockets, peanuts, packing paper...). Make sure there is plenty of room for the packing material on all sides of the box. If you use newspaper, you might want to wrap the board in plastic to avoid getting ink on it (and it wouldn't be a bad idea anyway).

Just an idea. Obviously, if you're looking for a long-term solution, it isn't the best.

Fun project :). A foam liner would be nice, but it isn't necessary with some good packing. I've moved so many times, I've gotten pretty good at it.

PM me when you're around, and we'll get a group together for some games! (see related thread started by tealeaf).

Well, if you are going to use it often for a long time make it well.
A quick google should find you foam bags like Instapak or something similar http://www.sealedairprotects.com/NA/EN/products/foam_packaging/instapak.aspx.
Basically these are bags you place around your content and fill with polyurethane foam (or somtehing like that), which hardens in the correct shape around the content.
So you can build a dedicated luggage which will hug your board and stones perfectly. Much better than air pockets or similar stuff, where the content and the packaging material can and will move in the box.

Is it a heavy board?
If so, you might want to invest in one of those fancy thick boxes with rope handles. The handles will save you some stress later on.

A layer or two of bubble (golf ball size bubbles) wrap around the inside of the box (including the top) should be sufficient. You can probably put the bowls in a small box between the legs.

Just an FYI-
The original GoBox was not big enough for a floor board. It only fit 6cm table boards and smaller. The box was not very well put together either. On the one I bought the latches pop open when bumped and the handle comes off if you pick the box up the wrong way. You are better off buying a folding board for travel then investing in the original GoBox.
