I have a regular over-the-board opponent. We are now trying to play on KGS, for the well known reason.
He has caring responsibilities which mean he needs to pause the game from time to time. Is there a way to achieve that with KGS, or do we just need to set generous time limits so that he never runs out.

An over-the-board game between us used to take about 60 minutes.

He can just disconnect, and when he reconnects he can click on the game again.

Or he can tell you "I'll be back in 5 minutes" and you add 5 minutes to his clock.

60 mins. total or per person ( or roughly 2 hrs total ) ?

Yes, options include:
  • Disconnect and Resume ; ( mentioned )
  • Add X mins. to his timer when he returns ( mentioned ) ;
  • Try Byo-yomi: ( 45 or 60 mins. Main time per person ), plus byo-yomi ;
  • Try Canadian (1 min.) + ( 30 mins. for 20 moves. ) ;
  • Other creative solutions :)

( I use a slow time setting for my serious online games at home to relay the moves on a real set, so it's like an in-person game, without the physical opponent. )

Sorry if this is a silly question. If the opponent is someone you know, and you trust him not to waste your time, can you not just play an untimed game? When you create the game, in the drop-down menu under "time system", choose "none".

Hi xela,

Not a silly question. I thought it's already covered under "generous time limits" and "other creative solutions", but just in case thirdfogie isn't aware of the KGS no time limit option, it's good you checked. :)
