Seems that KGS is really hosed right now.
Not only did IO get locked up, but finally KGS seems to no longer accept connections ( for a long time it was hanging ). Not only is the server down but the databse archive also seems down. Anyone knopw what's up?

Akkkk... I was creating a different avatar for upload, of a more conventional cat image, which will make your comment seem strange!

It's now the more conventional cat one. Until I change it...

There were issues. Still not sure what the root cause was, it was either that I didn't fix all problems from the crash a week ago, or because the root filesystem had filled up and made MySQL angry (the root filesystem was full, but it looked like maybe it filled up during a table repair operation, hard to say). Anyway the database became corrupted pretty bad. It is fixed now.

By the way, I hate it when the disk is broken up into lots of little partitions. The ISP did that for some reason when they initialized the disk, so now I have to always be fiddling around to keep the partitions from filling up. Why not just one huge one, that makes it so easy.

Right now the archives are failing while (fortunately) the site and server are up&running

Disc access on the inside of the disc platter is faster than access on the outside. By partitioning the drive, they can ensure that files that are very frequently accessed are on the fastest-to-access portion of the disc; they can also ensure that infrequently accessed files are stored on the outer edge of the platter.

But doing this just for the sake of doing it and without the input from the person who's going to be using the server is just silly.

How do you tell where each track is placed on the platter ?

KGS has been inaccessible for several hours now, from Rochester, Minnesota, U.S.A.
When I try to log in, the client reports connections are being refused.

Does anyone have any idea when it will be back online?

Edit: There is a page at Sensei's where several others have reported the problem.

http://senseis.xmp.net/?KGSServerStatus

Edit #2: The KGS website, including game retrieval from the archives is still working.

Confirmed by two more users. (I do not know when.)

Someone at Sensei's added this line:
Quote:
18:12 GMT - The server was knocked offline by the leap second on June 30. Admins are busy celebrating Canada Day.
Although that was most likely written in jest, if my memory is correct, when a leap second was added in 2012, there were problems with the server. But, it was fixed by rebooting the server.

Edit: It is finally back up!

I was trying to go to their site and I keep getting an error. Is their site down for anyone else?

nobody can help you if you dont tell people WHAT kind of error you get. I just tried the homepage and got an error message saying that their SSL key was too weak (?) or something,
ssl_error_weak_server_ephemeral_dh_key

so I changed the url from https to http and viola, it worked.

I got the same error.
I wasn't really looking for help, I was just wonder if this is the case for everyone or just me.

Post subject:  Re: KGS Status?

This came up recently in the help room. Someone had trouble with the log in page to purchase KGS Plus. I was able to duplicate the problem. One of the admins said the problem was a result of KGS using a old security standard, and Firefox had dropped support for that standard. Sure enough, if we used a different browser, we did not have the problem.

May I suggest the admins add something about this to the MOTD and/or the EGR room message, with or without more details in the admin announcement help page?
