Saying "the computer ate my post" was an error. It was my clumsiness. I accidentally quit the Firefox page my reply was on, and it didn't who up in history. |

Using whatever the shortcut is for your browser/os to open a new tab with a 'shift' key thrown in is often the keyboard shortcut for reopening a previously (mistakenly) closed tab. (ctrl-shift-t for windows I think). It may not have helped in this case but I thought I'd throw it out there as it's useful and not many people seem to know it. |

This is forced after MW's previous move. It's unclear me what W' best continuation is -
Any of a-e are possible, and I think I can handle all of them. The decision for me is if to extend at a in answer to e; or pull my stone out at b. I eventually rejected th other line because:
If white interjects the cut at 8 above, it leaves some annoying aji behind in my position. Obviously, 19 above is a mistake and I should give up the 2 stones (13 and 15) but it feels like I'm throwing away points. |

Expected continuation:
If W omits 8, he gets in trouble when I split his groups. The aji around a appears not to work for W. Next I intend to play at 9 to plug an obvious hole in my territory. This also protects against the cut at c. MW will need a very succesful invasion to stay in the game. |

Hane is natural for me here. Other moves may be possible, but as long as this doesn't collapse it should be not too bad. In reply, MW can contemplate either atari or save the 3 stone directly.
This looks readonable for B. I get around 20 points in the corner. The W side is not too big - I have a or b for later. W gets around 10 points here. Overall it looks like a good lead for black. Additionally, I may be able to save my single stone instead of 11:
The advanatage of this approach is that I seem to get sente to patch up the top. My corner is smaller, but I can capture at a in sente and have 15 points (W can exchange c for d before playing 15.) The other lines are similar, so I won't give them. |

I offer some conditional moves (107 connects):

I walked back from the supermarket earlier today. On my street, theere were lots of people waving flags and cheering. A red Bentely went past, and I was mildly surprised to see that the Queen and Prince Philip were inside. She was at the Epsom Derby, and her route home went in front of my house.
The other line is more exciting, if I get sente, but I was worried about this:
W gets sente here, and if I get less territory than in the game, so the line above is a blunder for me. However, it looks I may be able to offer sterner resistance:
I can't descend at 6 with move 5 - W will connect at 5. Continuation from here:
If I block at 9, W will move into the corner and start to make eye shape. W 12 force B to capture ate 13. (Obviously, this has a big follow up.) Then w 14 lives. B15 is a key move. I may not need to connect, and atari at a may be possible. However, it's clear that W hasn't collapses, and has a 5 point corner. In the game, I get a 20 point corner. So territorially, this whole line looks slack for B. |

Another conditional sequence:
It looks tempting to extend as below instead of 113:
followed by a squeeze. However, W seems to live in the corner so it's not brilliant for B. As played in the game, W needs a spectactularly good invasion at the top to have a chance. |

It's worth considering the score. W: 15-20 points upper left 5-10 points lower left 5-10 points lower side 5-15 points centre group 6.5 komi Total: 36.5 to 61.5 points. B: 5-10 points lower left 20-25 points lower right 15-20 points centre. Total: 40-55 points. So under the most pessimistic assumption about the endgame, I need around 20 points from my moyo to make the game close. It seems likely I'll achieve this, and that assumes best case endgame for W and worst case for B. Hence I seem to have a lead. My centre group is now strong. This makes W' shoulder hit a territory only move - I do not need to worry about bits dying. So my plan is to build up the upper right corner, and abandon the bit of moyo containing J17. I may need to sacrifice some of the centre wall in some variations, but it should be a small scale sacrifice and so OK for me. |
