I think this is the right side to block on. I expected him to jump into the corner - this was one of two moves I planned for. After this joseki, I'm not sure what I'm going to do just yet, but this is the only move for now, I feel. I'm tempted to aim around K17 after this sequence, but the shimari in the top right is not facing that direction. Still, it's fairly big I think. I'm studying a book on fuseki theory now. It's very nice to have these ideas spelled out for me as I've never really studied fuseki before. I also borrowed a board and some stones from go club so I can visualise the positions and what is going on more easily.

I shy away from triggers at my current level.. for one, I have never studied joseki, I just noticed a few patterns as I study games. So if I don't know it, my opponent might not either...

Maybe I am looking at it the wrong way and should suggest a trigger anyways? I'm not sure..

You did the right thing.

As planned, I think this is quite big. His shimari isn't pointing in this direction, but it still would be a nice extension for him to get. It's also a good extension from my hoshi stone, so I'll use my sente to get it now.

Admittedly I'm not quite sure what a trigger is - how is it defined? I just looked on Sensei's library and there was no page about it.

I am playing this approach with hopes for white to play (a) or (b) playing to make they group strong...

Okay, hopefully this pincer is good - seems people were a bit 'argh!' over the last one. My thoughts are that this pincer stops him benifiting fully from playing something like D10, and also I have presence on the top of the board. The fuseki book I'm now studying says that I shouldn't be afraid to use a severe pincer when I have presence on the side of the board adjacent to the pincer (the top in this case). I'm a bit concerned about black having all four corners (because of the proverb), but I don't see why this pincer is bad. We'll see soon enough. Fuseki almost over, yay, then I can play the stronger parts of my game... I just did a quick count - looks like he has ~48 points and I have ~13 + whatever I can make from my moyo on the top. I'd guess I'm behind by 15-20 points, as I expected I would be at the end of the fuseki. But now the weakest part of my game is about to be over with, I can start to work my way back into it hopefully . If only I didn't always end up ~20 points behind after fuseki, I'd probably be a couple of stones stronger... Hopefully this book will help me with that. It's kind of frustrating that my fuseki skills are like a 15k's, but at least my middlegame and endgame skills are a lot better...
