Wow. All of these old Malkovich games are coming back to bite me. It's difficult to be consistent with my earlier self. Am I even the same person as I was back then? I don't think so. |

I think that last move may have been a mistake. He abandoned the joseki which lets me save these stones in semi-sente. |

Now the question is "do I need to respond?"
My initial though is no. I can treat blocking at 'a'and running at 'b' as miai. After doing some reading, I have decided that this move is not sente. The aji of my weak stones on the bottom really help here, otherwise, I think B could seal me in. |

I feel like I play slow these days. Oh well. |

'a' is a little concerning, but I think there is enough openings in blacks shape to make a go of it. |

This way, I can protect the peep while threatening some biggish moves that might vut off B's stones on the left. I don't know if it is sente though. I might need to hold the followup in reserve. I am not sre what my next move will be if black responds locally. Maybe an approach at the top right? |

White is winning. I played some slow moves, while white played more efficiently:
My moves aren't worthless, but they are not worth as much as his moves are here. Since he played on the left side, in theory, I should be able to punish him in the area that I played. What I ended up with is a somewhat solid group without much profit. Because of this, I want to "take revenge" and play here:
He probably can't kill me on the bottom after all, and I should get profit. But that's not very rational. I had some confidence going into this game however many months or years ago that we started, because I have a higher rank. But objectively, looking at the stones, I need to admit that white got a better result in the last few moves. I need to accept that and endure. He will make a mistake later on. I just have to find it. I shouldn't give him more of a chance to get ahead just because he's ahead by a little bit in the opening. |

I thought about doing the large knights move approach to discourage a pincer and help me build a moyo on the left, but ultimately recanted because I am not sure how to respond if B pincers anyway. These are some of the results I have considered:

Top seems bigger than the right. |

I am not very familiar with this joseki, so I was looking through Josekipedia. It says this move is good when I have the top right corner, and it just looks like a cool move. Black can do a lot of things here, so I will wait to do any in depth analysis until after Blacks next move. |

Honestly, I don't know how to answer that move. So I won't right now. Should really start studying go again sometime... |

I hate this kind of tenuki. It makes the whole board position super important and I m not sure how to respond. I was hoping for something like this diagram. The theory was to make a bigger moyo on the left side, and with the approach, this looks unlikely. I think I need to 'punish' black for the tenuki and follow up locally. This seemed as good a way as any.

At this point, more than winning, I am just having fun. I know this kick is possible when M15 is not present, but it's not clear to me how it affects the situation. Ideally, I make M15 redundant and less useful than L16. Anyway, it looks interesting to me, so why not? |
