Despite the rank difference, Dusk Eagle and I will be playing an even game. Black: Dusk Eagle 2d White: mw42 1k Rules: Japanese Komi: 6.5 Open comments? No. Consultation of database/joseki dictionaries allowed? Yes.
Nigiri (Dusk, choose "odd" or "even" then peak): 1 |

I chose odd, so I'm black. Have a good game mw42!
I've been wanting to try out this opening I came up with, but I haven't had an opportunity to use in a game yet.
Normally, ![]() |

I considered the following moves
Then I stopped being ridiculous because I ran out of alphabet. |

Actually if I play 44 for the first move my database looks like this:
Anybody know what happen with t and u? is it just a glitch, corrupted sgf? Or did Cho Chikun really play A1 as a second move? |

Good game to you both, Ill be following this game with interest! T is the famous nose-blistering game. U is of course ridiculous. |

I am exercising my right to play an unusual move.
My explanation of ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I'm sure this is a ridiculously horrible move. ![]() |

Interesting. I considered a lot of choices here, so rather than write up a lot on each, I'll just quickly show what I was thinking for many different options. They're not necessarily correct ![]()
So, I figured his last move is low and territorial, so let's go with a territorial move myself. If our moves share the same goals, but mine are larger than his (as I believe is the case here), I will have a sure advantage. |

I think his move was sensible. It's certainly the move I would have played in the corner. I think my approach at ![]()
If the game goes like this, I will be looking for an opportunity to play at (b). If he pincers ![]() ![]() I don't know how he will play in the top-right, but I expect he will play the normal joseki in the bottom-right. He probably feels pretty comfortable after taking san-san with my silly little stone on the side (and is probably right to!). |

There were three moves I considered here.
So, I'm going with the one-space extension. I think the following diagram is most likely, but he might tenuki for his next move instead. Afterward, the top and the left seem like approximate miai.

Okay, if we follow the normal joseki I have the opportunity to play at ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Which do you prefer?
I like Diagram 3, so it will be my plan. ![]() |

Or maybe, with the last move in the diagram above one space higher... Is it worse? |

That seems too thin. I could be wrong, but I think if he was planning to tenuki, he shouldn't have played ![]() |

This jump makes the marked exchange look aji-keshi, but it's not a huge deal especially since (I think) I've already constrained black's development on the side. Black will almost certainly jump at (c) then I will jump at (d) aiming at (e). If B(f) then W(e) B(g) W(h) seems interesting. ![]() Oh, and I didn't like (a) or (b), that's why I didn't say anything about them. |

Quickie tewari analysis. If the board were like this:
...none of us would play this:
...because of the obvious play of black 2:
But somehow, we got here anyway. ![]() |
