i guess this game teaches everyone how important thickness is.
Lee Changho won games using this thickness concept alone.
thickness = points later.

sorry about dumb mistake that shorten the game.
i will try to put more comment on next game.

Magicwand I enjoy your Malkovich games very much but I am surprised at your attitude to the post-game analysis. Certainly your position was very thick and you managed to keep the balance well with white. I am not really qualified to assess the game given that I'm several stones weaker, but the way you speak of the game, you basically had a winning position because you were so thick and suddenly, with one move you were lost. But if you hadn't of made one move you think you would have won.

However, the lesson I would draw from this game is that playing for overwhelming thickness and giving away lots of cash can also be very risky. One reading mistake and all of that thickness might be for nothing, and the game is suddenly over. Whereas black, with all of that cash, even if he is slightly behind in the game, he always has the chance of inducing a white mistake, or making up the difference in the endgame, or whatever.

You seemed to put all of your eggs in one basket, which I am sure would be fine and well for Lee Changho, but...

I don't know, it seems to me that when you make a serious blunder and lose say 15 points, it's hard to come back unless your opponent also makes a serious blunder of his own. Especially at high levels of play you cant really come back from 15 points.
If the misread had come from black he would probably have lost the game too, cash or no cash.

I believe Magicwand has justified his predilection for thickness to us before. If broadly speaking you have thickness and your opponent has profit, you have a good idea of how many points you have to beat. Your opponent's cards are tabled, so to speak.

I think that the game can still be educational as to the value of thickness, even if the end result was a loss for white. Yithril and Magicwand both came to the conclusion that the game was very close most of the time, despite the fact that black had a clear territorial lead (in terms of definite points).
