How does; KGS/Japanese Rules, 0.5 Komi and open book, sound?
(I am perfectly happy if you want to change any of those).

Enjoy the game.

Hey Loons, have a great game! I'd prefer closed book because I don't think that using a joseki dictionary during a game will help me learn and it seems a bit unnatural, but feel free to try to talk me into it. :)

I've recently read on Csaba's teaching page that one should try to remember one's first ideas for a move and work on improving them. I suspect that these first ideas are indicitave of how you tend to think about the game. In a recent checklist thread, I wrote: three deadly sins:

jealousy
greed
anxiety

If I fail to notice it myself, I'd appreciate if anyone pointed out any first ideas or moves that exemplify these faults.

As to my first move, I basically didn't consider any other. I feel that 4 handicap stones means that I am ahead in influence, so I want to play a move that keeps that lead. Another candidate would be a high pincer, but I'm going to reject it on grounds of avoiding jealousy and anxiety. A pincer says: "I don't want white to expand on the top, let's start duking it out."

Well, I guess as has been discussed recently, joseki shouldn't be getting idolised anyway. I look forward to seeing the moves you come up with!
This extension aims at putting up a stern fight on top, rather than emphasising settling easily. If black chooses to invade later, his stone cannot make a side extension.

[go]$$Bcm1 Eg. It lacks this move which the 3 space extension has.

Incidentally, this is my first Malkovitch game, and that "show" button makes me feel like a kid walking past a peep show. To make this post, I clicked "quote" and the hidden part was briefly visible. It looked like a go diagram.

Goodness, I'm not at all used to having so much time to think, but unfortunately, I don't seem to know how to use all this time any more effectively than the minute or so I take for a move on KGS. All day long walking along the beach this position would pop up in my head and I'd think pretty much the same thing every time: Interesting. A 4 point extention by white. Farther than one would probably play in a non-handicap game. On the plus side it's light, on the minus side it's thin. Also, both stones are low. So what to do?

Of the three moves that first occurred to me, it seems that a and b would basically provoke w to strengthen his stones. c seems to have the advantage that it might make the board look blacker, but I don't like the idea of white playing d and getting an even fight in the area where I am ostensibly strongest. This led me to consider e, which prevents d and also has a reasonable relationship to my q4 stone. Then I thought about f which stakes a wider claim on the right side, but also makes a future white play at d more inviting. This led me to wonder if I'm already thinking too much about territory, and to consider g to continue to keep my influence lead. I decided against it because if I want to make a san ren sei, I have both g and h as options, so no hurry.

W has this sequence, but it is basically even and black has sente to play at a or b, so I think that would be ok. If white tenukies, he will leave the top stones thin. Oh. I also thought about playing 7 right away, but decided that that's more of the stupid type of move.

I keep on thinking of more sins:

impatience
inattention
confusion
laziness
fatigue

It occurs to me that instead of just thinking about what makes me tend to make bad moves, I might consider which virtues promote good moves. Unfortunately, I have a better grasp on what makes a bad move than what makes a good move. Nonetheless, I suppose patience and calmness can't hurt.

Once again, a quick catalog of the first moves that occurred to me.
I must admit that I haven't the foggiest idea of what my strategy should be at this point, nor do I have a clear idea when I envision possible basic josekis resulting for example from a or b which are advantageous and which are not. I kind of like the idea of white moving into the corner and getting a small postion there while I expand my influence, but I also have ..... FEARS! There are these handicap games where white takes one corner after another, there are these games where in reaction to such fear I secure one corner after another only to have them whittled to nothingness...

Obviously, fear is not good counsel.

So what's my plan? React calmly, patiently? That feels like a or c. What happens when I play a or c? Probably w moves up the left side, perhaps with another weird 4 space extention trying to pressure my d16 stone. Maybe he even goes up to c14. I don't like the idea of d 16 being pressured from both sides, causing me to make some defensive move and giving him opportunity to fix up his overly wide extensions... Is this fear talking or what? I'm not sure. Sometimes uncomfortable positions arise in go, and I'd rather if it was my opponent feeling that way.

What about a pincer? Pressure the approach stone and support d16 at the same time. Seems to make sense, but it's d4 and not d16 that is currently being approached. Nonetheless, a pincer, particularly a high one, also speaks to his thin position on the top. A 5 point extension I've heard Yang call ideal. That's my move.

Oh right, I like that one. I think I should play these two out more (or look them up), so I can learn some of the common results and differences in the two double-approaches.

Changing direction to the open side is a normal idea, eh. These patterns can sometimes be confusing, I am interested to see if daal (and I!) am familiar enough with them.

@Loons:
Not bad intuition. F4 was, indeed, a predicted move ... but it was mine. Chew predicted F3.

G3 is interesting, too.

@ Loons: I don't know exactly what "closed book" means, but I seriously doubt that I can keep myself from playing out variations on a board, so I hope you agree that that's allowed.

Jack Sparrow: Did you ever have that feeling when you're standing on the edge of a cliff and you just want to jump? I don't have it.

a and b are my first two thoughts, c is an afterthought and now the recently rehashed question of joseki knowledge comes into play. I'm sure that a leads to various josekis. I have no idea about b or c. In any case, the purpose of all of them is clear: to get out and keep white separated.

What's kind of interesting about this sort of double approach is that if white plays a stone on the 3-3 point, black is forced to make a choice and white can act accordingly. I expect white to end up with a fairly good position here, so my plan is to stay calm, not feel jealous and to make a reasonably comfortable position for myself.

It seems fruitless at this point to speculate much on continuations. I've played out one variation after another and they keep on turning out different every time. but suffice it to say that I don't particularly want to build a wall facing white's g4 stone.

I'm deciding on a because it moves closest to it's friend at d10.

In a four stone game, if Black is now going to play on the right side, :b4: leaves room for a possible two space extension by White in the bottom right, which "a" does not. However, :b4: is more solid and makes it easier to deal with an invasion by White.

Objectively, "a" may be better, but if so, I doubt if the difference is greater than one point. In a four stone game, :b4: may actually be better. :)

When I was learning go this jump attachment after a pincer was considered inferior, because it strengthened the weaker White stone. Pro opinion has changed. However, in this case, I think that :w7: is too far for the resultant Black strength to be effective.

Ha ha, I was wondering if I was going to get called out on calling a slightly slow move at the start of a 4H bad...
Black's last move is somewhat expected, so I guess good.

On more notes:

I felt like this is a potential "fuseki move"

[go]$$Wcm
$$ ----------------------+
$$ . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ O . . . . O . . . . . |

$$ . . . . . . . . 2 . . |
$$ . B . . . 4 . X . . . |
$$ . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ ----------------------+[/go]

While this is a potential middle game move (and thus less valuable):

$$ ----------------------+
$$ . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ O . . . . O . . . . . |
$$ . , . . . . . X . . . |
$$ . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ . . . . . . . X . . . |
$$ . . . . . . . . . . . |

$$ . . . . . . . a . . . |
$$ . , . . . . . , X . . |
$$ . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ . . . . . . . . . . . |[/go]

And further black may be less ideal after a corner invasion:

[go]$$Wc
$$ ----------------------+
$$ . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ . . . . . . 4 3 5 . . |
$$ O . . . . O 6 2 1 . . |
$$ . , . . . . . X . . . |
$$ . . . . . . . . 9 7 . |
$$ . . . . . . . X 0 8 . |
$$ . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ . . . . . . . . X . . |
$$ . , . . . . . , . . . |
$$ . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ . , . . . . . X . . . |
$$ . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ ----------------------+[/go]

However, I admittedly did not consider other lines of this corner invasion. Also, I think Bill is right that we're talking a < 1 or 2 point difference here :P.

As I said in my previous post, I don't want a wall facing his g4 stone, so I didn't really consider any other move here. I envision the continuation up to 9 leaving me wondering whether to play a or b but also sort of itching to play c which feels safer, but wronger.

I sometimes sense in myself a strong desire for things (positions on the go board) to make more sense than they do, and I wonder if this might be associated with my age. I mean, I'm old enough to know what to do when a fella approaches my corner, ain't I?

My point is: in a good game, the path to victory is never clear. Many moves are little leaps of faith. We're always relying on something that we're not quite so sure of, be it a principle or our own reading. There might be an objectively correct move in a certain situation, but we're not sitting in that objective seat during our own game, and I wonder if part of go strength is simply the ability to embrace the ambivalence of one's own decisions and to ride the wave.

In a nutshell, by "objectively" I was in fact meaning "very subjectively" (as is the normal use, I believe :P).
Perhaps daal is aiming to capture C6 with C7 hane, and is thus playing solidly.

But I couldn't find a continuation I really liked after :b12:

Itinerary:
After we finish here, I'd like to-
1) Approach bottom right at O3. I'm not sure for black's joseki. Attach on top, maybe?
2) Approach top left F17. Assuming kick, my existing stone gives me sente.
3) Invade top right, though depending on bottom right joseki, I may have to shoulder hit R11 first, or something.

And then I feel middle game will be well under way.:P
