An interesting question is whether the way I played in the game is better or worse than if I had played at K5 three moves ago. In other words, which of the two diagrams (with White to move in both) is better for Black?

It is a trade, of course--Black stabilized his group in exchange for giving White thickness in the center--but I like this trade (so far).

By the way, I will think about my next move rather than play at M10 automatically. This is why I did not offer a trigger. Besides, perhaps EdLee will be kind enough to play at K6. :D

I made an oversight in thinking that White would capture the stone. That's OK, though. We end up at essentially the same point as we were in before I tenuki-ed. I would really like to play on the left side now, but I need to assess just how much damage I stand to suffer on the right side if I don't reinforce my group there. Right now, I am reading the variations after White plays P14.

Edit:
In EdLee's case, I would have played on the 3rd line, as indicated below. This would make White much safer from an invasion. Is EdLee worried that if he plays low I might get to build a moyo in the center or does he think he can play on the 4th line and keep the territory, too?

My impression is that having made a wall on one side, Edlee wants to exert maximum pressure on the black centre group by playing high and threatening to ruin black's eyeshape and send him running. I am not absolutely certain of the way he plans to carry out this threat, though, so I may be mistaken.

Yes, that's my feeling too. The fact that Black is slightly concerned for that group RE: shape weak points just confirms it IMO (without Ed saying as much). Certainly I feel the high play is more interesting and proactive than Intrepid's other solution

The L17 option of The Intrepid seems rather slack, to be honest. It's quite gote and almost invites black to strengthen himself by poking at the gap. In addition, if white gets undercut, he can expand his eyespace with the atari at S16.

That looks amazing! Seeing the position in this form elevates the game to a whole new level. :)

I decided against playing at M10, as I previously intended, because I could not find any satisfactory way of dealing with WO10, which White could play at a later time.

Also, I decided against playing on the left side before reinforcing my weak group because doing so would be risky. Essentially, it is as if one of my hands were tied as long as that group is not secure. I could not safely invade the top and I would always be at risk of falling under a severe attack. Thus, I Lee-Changho-ed this one.

I'll think a bit first, but my plan was to invade at 3-3 in response to a wide extension down the left side as in the game or at "a."

In addition to the move in the game, I also considered invading at K17. However, the White structure is stronger than it would normally be in such positions due to the marked exchange, reducing the value of the invasion.

Moreover, the K17 invasion is likely to end in gote, while 3-3 invasions tend to be sente--and there are some big points to take still, such as "a" and "b" in the above diagram. Finally, since my group in the center is strong now, I am not worried about giving EdLee influence. The value of territory should now be greater than the value of influence.

Takao Vol. 2 just arrived recently -- Size of Stones Post #52 -- with a small section on 3-3 under 4-4 (3 pages),
which I don't think was in Ishida. Perfect timing to study. :study:

Now the question is whether White will choose the usual--gote--variation or if he'll sacrifice points for sente.
