It looks like EdLee was afraid of an invasion. I actually was not planning to invade. Anyway, I'll need to think about my move a bit. Perhaps I can try something like this:

I had a hard look at the position. It occurred to me that I was too dismissive of White's options in the bottom-left quarter of the board. Yet, White has surprisingly resilient invasions at the 3-4 and 3-2 points. As a result, I kept giving myself too many points there.

Thus, I came to the conclusion that I am, in fact, behind, currently. Thankfully, I like defending worse positions--at least in chess :D--so I expect no less from myself in Go.

I didn't explain the reasoning behind my last move. When I thought that I was ahead, my plan was to simply make a shimari in the bottom-left corner. However, now that I think I'm behind, my play has to be riskier. I'll need to read here a bit, but I hope to generate some kind of a splitting attack against the invading 4-4 stone and against White's stone on the left side. Otherwise, White's position is quite secure everywhere, so reversing the game by other means would be difficult.
Edit:
I might play a move such as this. :)

This move is a bit of a gamble on my part. If I attacked from the outside right away, White would build a wall facing the bottom--which has more open space than does the left side--and live relatively easily from there.

With this in mind, my hope is to force White to try to live (or run) along the left side. Essentially, I am gambling that EdLee will next respond at :w2: or "a," upon which I can attack from the outside more severely. A significant advantage to forcing White to try to live on the left side is that I can hope to more easily generate an attack against the lone White stone on the left side.

The problem with my move, though, is that White does not need the invasion to live. Instead, White may use the invasion to reduce Black's moyo in sente while building his own large territory in the middle. White could play something like this, for instance:

White's profit in the center would leave White with a hefty lead.

As a parenthetical remark, I'd like to note how different chess and Go are when it comes to defending worse positions. In chess, the best strategy is usually to go into "deep defense" mode (by building a fortress, for example). In Go, such a patient approach is rarely the appropriate choice (unless, of course, one plays the endgame as well as Lee Changho does). I quite like the "deep defense" approach of chess, but Go's active-initiation-of-complications-when-worse strategy is quite exciting, too. :)

An immediate response--and the one I wanted to see. This lets me proceed with my plan. Sweet!

Objectively speaking, EdLee will likely need to make a mistake or two for me to reverse the game, but making a mistake won't be too hard in the complications to come. :D Next, I'll try to calculate more thoroughly which move on the outside will be the severest (I am leaning toward a diadiageima jump, as I've indicated in my previous post).

White's stone at J7 provides good support for White's invasion in the bottom-left corner. Because of this, although I would have preferred to play at "a," I made the diadiageima extension so as to make sure White has no easy way to connect his stones. The drawback of this, of course, is that the jump leaves behind weaknesses at points marked "b."

Next, White will likely try to exploit these weaknesses to settle his group. However, doing so is not easy. For instance, the following would be an ideal continuation for me. :D

A Notice of Delay

EdLee, I'll be travelling during the next two weeks, and it's unlikely I'll have time to make moves during that time. Hence, should you fancy taking 14 days to think over your next move, let nothing stop you from doing so. :)
EdLee still has not made any post, including a "first feeling" post which EdLee tends to do (as do I). This suggests that he did not expect my move and that it is not apparent to him what to play in response. Excellent! That said, I am not yet sure how I would respond here as White, either, so I certainly don't blame him.

Since the beginning of the game, I've made several pronouncements regarding how "the game is about to get very complicated," without any such complications ever arising. Not so this time.

Interesting position!
B's move feels like a bit of an overplay. I don't know the best reply for W. However, using The Intepid's vaiation:

7 is and improvement over the line The Intrepid gave. After 8, W has two choices.

This may be playable for W - the corner looks like to drop off for B, although B gains on the outside.

W may be able to handle this fight, which is on a bigger scale than the previous idea. (IF may be possible to find moves for 3 which are better shape than my suggestion as well.

No problem. take your time. :) I returned a week ago but I'm still taking a vacation from the vacation, if you know what I mean. It was pretty intense out there. I swam with wild sea lions, for example. Inquisitive, but also extremely devious creatures! There was this one female sea lion in particular, who kept looking at me under water with her big black eyes, begging me to keep following her. Yet, as I did, she kept drawing me more and more into deep waters, big waves, and strong sea currents. It's a good thing I realized what was happening in time, else getting back to shore might have proven to be an ordeal. An insidious beast! ... or maybe she was just trying to teach me a lesson about how to play Go. ;)

It was in New Zealand. Here, sea lions are incorrectly called "fur seals" but there is an easy way to tell if a creature is a seal or a sea lion. Approach one on land, whack it on the nose, and see if it gives chase. If it does, then it's a sea lion. If it doesn't, then it's a seal. In New Zealand, it would definitely give chanse--and then a hell of a bite to boot. :)

I don't have pictures from that swim, but the picture below should give you a glimpse into how it feels to swim with sea lions.
