Man, deciding how to play here is hard! Moreover, the more I look at the various possibilities, the more I become convinced a massive, hugely complicated fight is unavoidable--an outcome which runs counter to my intended way of playing this game. Hmm, maybe I should just go for the complications.

Anyhow, it looks like just about any visually reasonable move is playable here. Nevertheless, I think I'll play one of the following two moves:

"a" is somewhat of a probe, giving White the choice of whether to pincer (which I believe to be the better option) or not. The close-low :w2: pincer is probably best, although Q11 cannot be bad either. After :w2:, I would again end up with a wide choice of moves (including c though g):

By contrast, playing "b" more or less forces the following sequence (although :w8: can be different):

This would lead to a big moyo vs. big moyo fight. Various attempts at invasion or reduction would be coming next, so my playing at "a" could end up being unavoidable, anyway.

For beginners. First feeling: reply (a) direction, or pincer (b) direction?
Probably mood, but will think of the continuations...

EdLee's thinking. Good! That means he is no more familiar with the situation than I am. Overall, I am satisfied with my choice of fuseki, so far. Let's see what happens going forward, but the opening seems perfectly playable for Black. I am rather surprised that professionals have not tried playing like this before. Are we witnessing the first entry to a revolutionary new Go opening right here on this very forum? I'm glad to be of service. :D

Not for players:

Here's a pro game with a similar shape:

The move order is different here, but if EdLee plays the one space pincer it could transition into this shape.

I've done some additional searching regarding the shape of Black's first three stones. The closest game I could find was Takagawa Kaku (W) vs. Kitani Minoru (B) (July 3, 1959):

This led to a close game where White won by the smallest of margins (0.5 of a point).

Uberdude made a post. Yes! Achievement unlocked. :salute: In real life, you know you've made it big when they name a road, a school, a disease, or a city after you. Online, it is things like this that tell a person he's arrived. Now, we need Magicwand to make a post, and the game will advance to the next level.

On a separate note, EdLee is thinking hard. I don't blame him. His next move could determine the character of the game. He is probably trying to figure out how to best thwart the various plans I could choose. One such plan is for me to try to get a stable group on the right side (preventing White from getting much territory there) and then build my own territory on the bottom. To illustrate, if EdLee did nothing but pass, I would not mind getting the following two moves in:

EdLee must be busy at work. Anyhow, I thought I would titillate the masses by showing that I intend to play a knight's jump in response to a close-low pincer. A relatively rare move, to be sure, but one that is very enterprising, from what I can tell.

With holiday travels and other stresses, my brain is not good (obvious from my two in-person games yesterday .)
Also, from skimming Ishida and Takao, I found out I know practically nothing about the LR variations. :geek:
So more studying of the books is not very helpful now.

For beginners. I don't understand B's choice of :b11: -- maybe I'll find out his reasons after the game --
because if we just compare the left, the top, and the right, the right side is the "shortest".
Of course, this is not to say that gap size is the only factor, but it is one consideration.
This also does not mean that :b11: is not playable; especially at these levels, it's most likely no problem at all.

Sweet! I keep correctly anticipating EdLee's moves. :D If this continues, I will be able to obtain a favorable or at least satisfactory outcome out of the opening. That said, I do believe that playing the close-low pincer was White's best option in the position. Otherwise, Black would get what he wants a bit too easily.

As mentioned previously, I intend to play a knight's jump next. However, I will first recheck more thoroughly all the likely variations which could follow now that the pincer was actually played.

Needless to say, my initial plan to play safely, get into an endgame, make slightly more efficient moves ... and win by 1.5 points ;-) ... has gone out the window--at least for the moment. I expect the situation to complicate and to intensify noticeably during the next 20 moves or more.

Doesn't that assume that your judgement of the results from the sequences are definitely correct? ;)

I remember one of Bill Spight's comments on a review a couple of year ago about giving his opponent whatever they want, and winning anyway.

No doubt about it :) ... that's why I said "favorable or at least satisfactory" (emphasis added). I'm quite aware my judgment could be wrong. However, the rules for this game permit us to use pro-game databases, and it is early enough in the game where, to a large extent, I can rely on professionals' judgment rather than on my own. Anyhow, let's see what happens. :)
Edit:
I thought to add that, according to pugilists and MMA fighters, it is "the punches you don't see coming that knock you out." This piece of wisdom applies to Go, as well, obviously. Them boxers know what's up, know what I'm saying? :)

I'm a bit preoccupied right now, so I'll have to post comments, expectiations, and so on tomorrow or the day after. For the moment, I'll just say that I've never played or read about this move before. As such, I am not entirely sure if I'll get the outcome that I would like, but I am optimistic regarding what might happen.

Ed, I'll be traveling or otherwise preoccupied during the next ten days or so. Therefore, don't feel pressured to make a move any time soon. It's unlikely I'd be able to reply for a while, anyway. :)

Database search showed that :bc: = :b13: is an occasional move (for the local UR corner, 31 out of 50,744 games.)
The most popular W replies were a tie between (a) and (b), each with only 9 games (out of 50,744!).
And of course, their boards were completely different from here.
I have no idea what they were doing. Go is too deep. I just play my own game.

I'm still not home, but I'll be returning in a few days. Thus, I should be able to make a move by Tuesday or Wednesday. :)
I know that I still have not posted comments regarding my previous move. I'll get to it soon. I'll just note that EdLee had a wide choice of moves available to him. However, interestingly enough, when professionals defended the corner, they overwhelmingly preferred the following to EdLee's move:

I don't quite yet understand why, but it probably has to do with corner aji. I believe my current choice mainly consists of "b" and "c," with my previous analysis suggesting that I should play "b."

Also, I should add that, upon a more detailed analysis, the move I chose might be sub-optimal, given that White has influence on the bottom right. Thus, in retrospect, perhaps one of the moves the pros preferred in such positions, such as "d" or "e," would have been objectively stronger. That said, I think everything is still under control.

Anyway, full commentary on the last move will be posted in a few days.
