No I do not mean a Malkovich game between pros.

I mean this: take one of your favorite pro players. Have someone else take another pro player.

Then play out the game here, with each player trying to explain the moves of their champion one by one.

Any takers?

My favorite player is Yoda Norimoto.

I could try this? I've never really studied pro games, so this would be kind of an ideal format for it: going over it with someone, going over every move, and debating on differences in opinions. Very study-group-y.

I would particularly like doing it on a fairly simple game, where we might get more benefit from it.

I imagine half the comments would be something like "I apparently just closed my eyes and dropped the stone on the board" :)

I think this is a great idea.

Even better - community commenting on pro games. Like, after each move, as many people as possible comment on this move. If then somebody can clean up the comments and post the game(s) on a webpage, this might be a really good learning tool (I can do that if nobody else will). Does not even need to be a pro game.

I think we have had something along these lines on GD, but it was more like 'guess the next move' rather 'comment on the last move' thingie.

This thread has been idle for a month, but I also think it would be a great idea. The variation I had in mind: someone takes a random pro game and plays it out without comment, maybe a move per day or so, as everyone else comments on previous moves or what they think will happen next.

I might just start this up myself and see if it gets any traction.

I completely agree. But it might make sense to play at least 5-10 moves and allow a few days for comment (depending on the context-- that is, if a move is particularly interesting, stop on that move or right before it). If someone else doesn't do this, I might.

Another variation that can be played at home is "Big Brother Malkovich" games with pros.

What I mean by this is that you can play the game as follows:
1.) Get an SGF pro game record with a pro you like as one of the players. For example, if you like Lee Changho, pick a game he played.

2.) Open the SGF with your favorite SGF editor.

3.) Start at the beginning of the game. When it is your favorite player's turn to play, before looking at his/her move, come up with your own move to play for the current board position. Play the move, and come up with a rationale for the move.

4.) Look at the move your favorite pro played. If it's the same, continue with the game. If it's different, you lose 1/2 a point. Your favorite pro is the "big brother", and he overrules your move.

At the end of the game, you and your favorite pro will probably lose, but it's still a fun challenge.

This may, in fact, be just how most people replay pro games, but it does seem to have similarities with the "Big Brother Malkovich" discussed on this forum, I think.

The Go Consultants is a book (which I haven't read, but really want to) about a Malkovich game between pros.

Done!
