Post subject:  Help identifying the type of wood used for a new Go board

Hello fellow Go enthusiasts,

I have acquired a wonderful used Go board online however the seller was not able to provide much information about it unfortunately. I would like some help in identifying what kind of go board I might have, particularly what kind of wood it’s made of. I will post some images here, please have a look and help me identify this beautiful Go board. : )

If possible please let me know if this would be considered a high quality board?

Thank you so much for your help it’s truly appreciated.

Hi,

Note: you can get more attention posting on the right subforum ;-)
that IMHO is https://lifein19x19.com/viewforum.php?f=19

Anyway, thankyou for posting and sharing your goban pictures.
According to my limited experience, I can see you have a very nice board.

The cut is Masame, the most valued, with all the top surface crossed by straight lines of the grain of the wood.

I am not so skilled enough to judge the wood from the pictures you shared, but I guess it is spruce or pine (maybe you can test it through a weight test (kaya wood is more dense than spruce, you can find useful information online at sensei library https://senseis.xmp.net/).

This said, this is a valuable piece, to have a new one you can pay something like 800,000 JPY (~6,000 $ in Japan, add shipping and taxes).
I do not have a value on the 2nd hand marked and please consider that the shop values have inflated greatly after 2016's AI outbreak and increase of Go's world visibility. So aftermarket can grant good opportunities.
A nice play to look at to understand the value of your board is the store at Baduk Club https://store.baduk.club/collections/vintage-gear/vintage.

Enjoy your new Goban!
