Post subject:  Why did my opponent resign? (9k vs 7k)

I don't normally post my wins here (especially ones like this) because the losses are the things I really learn from.

My opponent resigned after 60-some moves. Don't get me wrong, I was pretty happy with how the game had been going (I had just read Otake's Opening Theory Made Easy and was busily trying stuff out) but resignation seemed extreme, especially since my opponent was stronger than me and it wasn't like I'd just killed a big group (or even any groups).

Was he/she right? Or just suffering from tilt?

Looks like black has an easy win. Three corners secures with a good position in the fourth. A safe side group and access to the middle. Where is white going to make enough territory?

Someone quoted this at me when I had badly lost a game...

This is kinda what I thought. I basically won in the least skillful way possible - through my opponent resigning a very bankable position. I was going to rely on harassing his floating group at the bottom and maybe the one on the left, but my feeling is he/she could probably have just ignored it and consolidated the cash already in hand.

How deflating.

Hi joeller,

:w26: Hane G4.

:w28: Turn G4.

:w40: Take -- then B cannot get D18 atari.

:w52: maybe Q3 bigger ?

Sometimes you cannot know for sure the real reasons people do anything:
Maybe your opponent had to:
  • Go to the dinner table because the mom was calling;
  • Get ready to go to work;
  • Drive their children to school or other activities;
  • Put out a fire in the kitchen;
  • Go on a date;
  • Go to the bank before they close;
  • Catch a flight;
  • Etc.
The possibilities are limitless -- they may have nothing to do with the board situation. :)

At these levels, the actual outcome of this game,
if played out, is far from a done deal.

In a way, you were lucky your opponent politely resigned instead of flat out escaped.
