You have a good eye for big points and e.g. at 90 you make a timely decision to play such big point. Your improvements are on the technical/tactical level. #1 When the going gets tough, the tough get reading This is true up until at least my level (low dan) so make it a good habit while you are still 9k. 192: find the tesuji that saves your game (I'll post the rest of my comments later) |

Knotwilg wrote: ... Your improvements are on the technical/tactical level... I agree with this. In particular, I note that your play is generally solid. You get safe positions while he has more vulnerable positions. Then, instead of exploiting your advantage, you let him make life or connect. An example is move 24: A contact move is generally a defensive move. It tends to provoke small quick fights, and those fights tend to resolve before the attacking player can bring his stronger forces to bear. You have strong positions on either side, so you want a fight that unfolds more slowly, making him invest more stones while still being uncertain about life. A good rule of thumb for the attacking player: "Don't play with your food." This not only makes territory for you, it attacks him while leaving no weak spots. |

Thanks Knotwilg & Joaz for the comments. I fully agree - for my level i think i'm better at finding bigger moves, direction of play, while my weakness is in reading. I try to practice tsumego daily but progress is slow! |

For the record, beyond 24 which was highlighted twice already, 66 - captures an unimportant stone 76 - self removal of liberties (hane at the head of 2) 94 - threaten non working cut 114 (& ...) - not responding to important atari 124 - empty triangle 170 - worthless peep, better hane other side 174 - defed worthless stones, better play where Black played next 180 - simplify and capture 192 - the missed tesuji From these comments, a useful instruction for future matches may be: when defending/leaving/putting stones in danger, ask yourself: are they important (114) or not (66, 174). Important stones are cutting/connecting stones, or stones defining the shape of a group. Isolated stones which only represent points, can be treated as junk until the endgame reaches their value. |

[admin] This forum works best when there is one game per thread. Otherwise, comments about games get interleaved, and the thread gets confusing. So I moved the second game to its own thread: https://lifein19x19.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=18137 -JB [/admin] |
