This game is a bit of a mess. I think I was ahead at move 110, but not by a lot - I made one or two slow moves (22?), a few dumb/slack moves, and he ended up with a nice position in the upper right. Nonetheless, he neglected to block out the corner, so I thought I would invade in sente and then go kill the upper left, which would leave me ahead. The problem: he hane'd rather than making the third extension (117). I figured I had to start slicing and dicing his wall, but it ended up being a huge disaster. I checked josekipedia after the game, and their suggested line doesn't work, due to black stones in the vicinity. Nothing else I tried worked either (although there are variations that aren't quite as ugly as the game). Thus the theme of my question: what can I do? Can I cut? Should I just leave the position alone and hope that aji develops later? Do I just need to accept that when B is sufficiently over concentrated, the invasion is gote? [deleted] |

I would play R18 in response to P18. Black will need to play something like O17 sometime, or you can play O18. Either way, he has to fix his shape (or accept your reduction). He might also get T14 in, which is fine, because you'll still end in sente. Compared to extending at R13, S13 makes R13 a weaker area, but I can't see a way to directly expose it at this time since black can get T14 in sente (if he could not, you could play S12 if he protected at O17, for example). If you want to prevent the T14 sente move he plays, you could play S17, maybe. But I think that it's fine to simply play as you did until he played P18. Then just play R18 and see how he defends. After that, see if there is something you can do. Don't just play a move. See what he can do, and what you can do in response. If you find something that works, cash in. Otherwise, take sente elsewhere. Sente is fine. You got your points. He's got weakness to take care of. |

Why not simply live in the corner (move 120 connect at R18) before trying anything fancy? It looks like this would lead to an easy win on territory, with little scope for complications. Once you are safely alive, the various cuts do work, so B either needs to add another defensive move or suffer large losses when you start cutting. Your original plan to live in the corner in sente was fine, you just deviated from the plan too early ![]() |

Thanks for the comments, guys. I'm embarrassed to admit that I didn't think I could live in the corner in sente after that hane. I realized after reading your comments that I was getting confused about a sequence where black gets a gote seki, which is big, but not urgent. |
