Game Against Breakfast: (Ongoing)

Post by shapenaji »

Hey folks, thought I'd post the sgf from my game against breakfast on OGS. It's starting to get spicy,

(Since this IS an ongoing game, I ask that folks refrain from opinions about future lines of play or weaknesses in various positions around the board. I don't know that it's possible to comment much yet, but I'll post the sgf's as they get updated and there might be some windows to talk about stuff.)

(Especially when I get hosed in a fight)

EDIT: to minimize threadspace, I'll keep the sgf at the top updated.

f17 is a little unusual, large knight at g17 is more normal (50 to 20 hits in GoGoD), but I don't think it's bad. However, for sure I think c17 is bad (0 hits in GoGoD). If you play the large knight then you can block at 3-3 as the corner is bigger, with f17 the corner is too small to block. Even with the large knight tenuki is common as to give black the b16 slide in sente to strengthen his group in sente is kind. But the downside of tenuki with g17 is black can play d17 rather than just c17 next, with the small knight that is not possible as you just cut and ladder it.

I had some logic for taking 3x3, but I agree, it's slow. Hopefully I'll get to play some of the follow-ups there.

Interesting trade on the right side; hard for me to judge who it is good for but doesn't immediately seem bad for you. But why didn't breakfast connect the r5 atari? Yes that exchange does help you a little bit if you then p7 and in the future the r9 liberty does a bit more for you (though still gote). But after p7 black ataris in sente and then m3 and the white group on the right is still unsettled.

EDIT: hmm maybe you tenuki r6 atari to come back to m3 and the p7 for r6 exchange has helped your group make a bit of shape as shielding kikashi so it's harder for him to attack it?

I played r5 because once he played N4, my squeeze aji was disappearing, and I read a bunch of sequences where he plays M9 or somesuch and then when I'm rushing to live, I kept coming up against the fact that he could give up the stone at Q5 and connect R7 underneath.

Now, as to why he let me have the stone, I'm not totally sure. M3 is enormous for me, and his M3 checks the growth of K3. I assumed he would connect and then I'd M3 and I'd get to use the R5 aji to protect O9.

Pretty happy with this , but now I'm worried about B17, it's big, but it also feels slow...

EDIT: These positions are always the hardest for me... the broad, shallow ones.

Well, currently I have points and he doesn't. I count myself with about 50 solid points (40 if I give him a generous endgame) and him with about 25 solid points.

But that doesn't really tell the whole story. I have pretty much no territory on the bottom (it looks like a big framework, but it's very easy for him to invade) and this is going to come down to fighting in the center.

:w26: @ D5 - why? I'm guessing it's for sente, but the sente play you take isn't urgent or all that big. So... more a stylistic choice?

Numsgil: In this case, it sorta called out to me, I felt it left less awkward aji on my end and more possibilities to abuse the aji around D2...

Just solidly blocking gives a lot of thickness, but he's absolutely alive, I guess I may have been a little too tricky.
