Hi everyone! I played a quite close game today on KGS, and made many moves that most probably need reconsideration... Here is the game: First of all, I often try to play M17 princer against an approach, because I like very much the outcome IF the opponent invades the corner after it. But I dislike most results after he makes another approach from the other side. In this game it worked okay, but also my R16 move will probably be reviewed as to slow:P Another thing is my N4 move, I thought it is quite okay, but the hane at M5 was probably bad... After white 40, I should probably come back somewhere like N5, because the upper left corner/side was still not consolidated, or come back after white 42. Black greedy 43 transformed quite a good game for me, into a not so good one ![]() Of course waiting so long with saving my bottom right corner was big problem:/ Thanks in advance ![]() |

Even T4, I believe, will not save you in the lower right corner. You need to play S1 at some point after ![]() |

I'm not really strong enough to give an authoritative review, so think of these as just my ideas. I think L3 is a thank-you move. It helps your opponent's shape and gains you what..two points? M5 seems fine to me. I'd play 49 at M7 or somewhere else on the right. 65: S4 gives white the hanging connection, I think S3 would be better. 69: I think S7 is the killing move. |

You say you like to play the m17 pincer after an approach, but did you consider your other stones on the board? It's not good in the Chinese opening. White simply takes the corner and whichever side you block on you get an unsatisfactory result (block top, your right side moyo is wrecked; block right, you build a gote wall which is too flat at r9). |

The double hane at move 15 seems too aggressive. It creates weaknesses for you which he can exploit - which he did by playing at 'a': Instead, you can still make him very uncomfortable while keeping your stones strong by playing at L17: His options are not pleasant. He can run along the second line: ...in which he gets one point per move while you get a wall that is worth something like 3 points per move. Or, he can try to fight: ...which probably ends in his death. Or he can go for territory: ...which forces you to make your wall very strong, and and lives in gote while you prepare to attack on the right side. Note that you do not have to be ultra aggressive. Often the most dangerous move you can make is a solid move that expands and consolidates your power, because if you then start a fight, he will lose it. |

If the second diagram is even, how could the first diagram be bad for B? |
