Or perhaps a Penrose quasi crystal.

Pentagon tiling is also possible (though the pentagons are not regular), with intersections having varying numbers of liberties.

These are great! Apparently some were discovered by Marjorie Rice, a housewife, in the seventies after reading a column of Martin Gardner's.

Maybe I like this best for hexagonal go. Anyone want to try? The board has 90 intersections, so sort of like 9x9. X's are not intersections.

Maybe this is better, with circles allowed and empty meaning not an intersection? (Edit: put boundary on this one.)

With some work, you can make it look cleaner. Plus if the grid is going to be hexagonal, cut off the corners and make the board a hexagon too.

Wait until the arbitrary-polygon, arbitrary-colour edition of EidoGo comes out. :)

Ok, you guys are just hurting my head now. Though on subject of complicated ideas, how about a 38x38 where 4 pairs of people can only play on their respective 19x19 corners but can work in unison along the edges?

Too bad there isn't a way to test out 3 color go on KGS or perhaps I'd try it.

I played a game on a hexagonal grid with triangular tiling. It was very awkward, because each point (except the ones on the edges) had six liberties rather than four. The extra two liberties meant that capture was almost impossible, and most of the board ended up in long intertwined tentacles.

Re three color go scoring: if a group dies (that is, its last liberty filled in) why not simply count those stones against the points of whoever they belong to? That is, if 5 black stones are removed from the board, have the black player subtract 5 from his or her score? This would require allowing for negative scores, but it seems simpler to me.

That's what I thought the first time I saw a go board, and was told that the pieces go on the intersections and not in the squares.

I think this would be (almost) the same as using areascoring.

The big problem I see with these alternate geometries is that it's very difficult to visualize territory. Things which appear adjacent are not, and so I get the feeling that the game becomes more about capturing stones.

I'm more of a fan of keeping a cartesian grid(although polar coordinates might be interesting), but then changing the shape of the board, adding "terrain" etc...

I think, in fact, that you might be able to get people to use some of the strange geometries by adding them as features on an otherwise grid-like board. Then people can use them in interesting ways while still keeping the capacity to see the territory on the board.

I think it would be much easier to do in ascii:

Code:
      ..  ..  ..  ..
    ..  ..  ..  ..  ..
  ..  ..  ..  ..  ..  ..
..  ..  ..  ..  ..  ..  ..
  ..  ..  ..  ..  ..  ..
    ..  ..  ..  ..  ..
      ..  ..  ..  ..

Every dot is a playable point, Each has 3 liberties, except the edges, with 2 or 1. It's pretty easy to make boards of different sizes this way:
Code:
  ..  ..
..  ..  ..
  ..  ..

Bigger:

Code:
        ..  ..  ..  ..  ..
      ..  ..  ..  ..  ..  ..
    ..  ..  ..  ..  ..  ..  ..
  ..  ..  ..  ..  ..  ..  ..  ..
..  ..  ..  ..  ..  ..  ..  ..  ..
  ..  ..  ..  ..  ..  ..  ..  ..
    ..  ..  ..  ..  ..  ..  ..
      ..  ..  ..  ..  ..  ..
        ..  ..  ..  ..  ..

I can attach the python function I made to print these, it's about 5 lines of code. If someone's interested, I'd be up for a game :)
