Post subject:  Dragon downtime on 24-Aug-2015 in a nutshell

As some do not have access to the DGS-forums yet, here's the latest update from the News-forum: http://www.dragongoserver.net/forum/rea ... 5638#45638

The Dragon Go Server was not reachable for some of the users, because the domain expired and was not renewed (automatically).

This happened on Mon, 24-Aug-2015 approximately between 13:00 - 17:00 UTC and has been resolved by now.
The domain has been renewed and the DNS settings has been restored.
In some cases it may take up to a full day till the domain-name resolves without problems again (over the DNS-system).

What happened is, that after the domain expired on the 21-Aug-2015, the registrar replaced the DNS-settings of the domain during Monday, so that the browsers (or other clients) could not resolve the domain to the IP-address of the DGS webserver any longer. So the server was still running, but your browsers could not retrieve the IP for the domain over the DNS-system.

Analysis on todays web-logs indicate, that between 13:00 - 17:00 UTC the number of requests dropped by 40-50% (usually there are ca. 25.000-30.000 requests per hour, but during the mentioned time-window there were on average only 15.000 per hour). That means that a lot of users could still access the servers as long as their DNS caches still contained the correct IP of the server. So some users could still access it and some could not.

Timeline of events:
  • 13:00 UTC: number of web-requests started to drop
  • 14:30 UTC: I've received an email about the situation.
All cron-jobs and game clocks have been disabled at this time! (to avoid time-outs)
  • 16:30 UTC: domain-owner has been successfully contacted, who renewed the domain and reset the DNS-settings.
  • 17:00 UTC: number of web-requests started to rise again
  • 23:00 UTC: re-enabled most of the cron-jobs (except game-clocks)
Current state:
Game clocks are still stopped till they will be re-enabled tomorrow to allow all DNS-caches to retrieve the correct IP-address again. Usually this takes about a day.

Sorry for the inconvenience!

Cheers,
/JUG (DGS-Admin, http://www.dragongoserver.net/userinfo.php?uid=5318)

So who's the domain owner? And why didn't they have the domain set to auto-renew?
