Hey everybody on L19! My RL name is Bryan, KGS handle terraform, but you can call me Bob's uncle for all I care. =) I'm currently a college student hopefully halfway to a bachelor's in comp. sci. I've been playing for a few months now, so I thought it was about time to start getting outside help in my studies. There are some go players at my school (I can't find them, but I know they're there!) and there are a lot of nice players on KGS that offer their advice after I get thoroughly smashed, but someone on KGS told me this was the best place to learn outside of playing. So I hope to be able to contribute soon!

My current goal (which will be my goal for the next, oh, 28 or so years) is to play 10,000 games. I just started this goal recently (just finished game 4, in fact, even though he forfeited during the counting part), so if you feel like getting a confidence boost, I'm definitely always up for a game (so long as I'm not in class or working - sleep and studying can wait!).

I'm also currently obsessed with the taisha joseki. I saw a variation in a game, and I've been trying to bait someone into playing it with me, but no one wants to! On that note, a quick question if I'm allowed: is 5-3 the best way to start it (best as in, the other player will be the most likely to start sequences) or 4-3 and let the other player pincer?

Greetings from another college student! As for the taisha, it most commonly occurs when a player with a 34 stone ignores an approach and his opponent gets a follow up. However, I play 5-3 all the time, so I see it come up that way too.

Howdy from Dallas! Ditto what Jedo said regarding the taisha. This is, indeed, a fun place to spend your time talking and learning about go. Welcome!

Hello Jedo and Chew!

Chew, I've seen your username on that Go map site. I forget its name. I remember thinking, "Wow, this Chew guy is so good!" Weird, eh?

Well, Jedo, I think I'll have to take a look at some of your games when I get the chance ;-). 5-3 was always an interesting opening move to me. It never works out well when I play it, of course, but it's interesting nonetheless.
