Hey all! Most of you know me from godiscussion's (most likley) My name is Daniel Thomas. Ive been a MMOer/Gamer for most of my life (since the good old days of space invders) now, don't get me wrong im not one of those guy's who went to a arcade and played it. I just never found the apeal of that. But as I grew up my taste in games changed. (super mario bro's,Mario rpg,Final fantasy 7,8,9,Perfect dark) But after a while playing my freind's got boring and so I adventured out into the internet game play. (Runescape,Webdocent) Those were the day's. playing aganst people I would never meet or possibly see ever again. were people were judged for their actions and not look's/ racial bias. To me it was the purist form of existing. And as my highscool day's were coming to a close. I began working etc. etc. So two years ago I came back on the internet scene and started playing Combat arm's (online First person shooter) and Won WOGL(world online gaming leage - legit players only) And then yet again the bordom set in. So, I went onto the MMO Ether saga during it's closed beta. and stayed until a month or so ago. So let's backtrack to last augest. My wife of 2 month's Decided on my birthday while I was buying our movie ticket's to harry potter (yes, harry potter) To go to a local gaming store and ask the attendant. "My husband keep's getting bored of game's but enjoys a challange. What would you suggest?" So this attendant shows her a go board. and explain's that no matter how long he play's he will never be done. and so she buy's it. So as we are sitting in the theater for this movie to start she hands me it and I open it. My first thought was "huh?". We read the rules and play a bit. At first i thought this is going to be easy.... Was I wrong. as I learned more about the game (japan's involvment, internatonal tornaments) I was intreaged. So I found a progam called Turbogo and played it until I could beat the hardest difficulty with 3 stones. So then I figured it was time to try aganst a human player online. I got trounced- wait, trounced was not the word for it. He was a 10k something I thought was about my level. Turns out I was about 22k yeah 22k. my ego was crushed. I thought (22k after a month of playing?) There's no way. It would take 3-5 yeahs to hit shodan! But it showed something. this would not be easy. And so i set out, on a long hard road that would never end. So after a few months of playing a few games on and off, reading a bit here and there. still playing ether saga. i found after a while. ether saga because the side game. and go was becoming what I did when I woke up, when I had spare time. So a month ago i said my farewells to all my freind's on ether saga. and started taking go serously. after selling my eso account. and using that to buy book's. I have a small libary of information. And now I enjoy waking up, going out and getting coffie. and playing go in the morning and night. And The board that started it all. will soon be used to teach my son. Well thats me. - POGO Why POGO? Well my mmo name was always Prophet Or NightProphet. So to continue that. PO=Prophet GO=Go Ok, Why not GOPO? -___- Go....Poo? Added stuff: since my go discussions post, for the most part ive been teaching my son how to play, he's about 20k right now (hes only 1 1/2) he plays go better then he speaks. kinda cute (trying to find my camera cord to upload a picture) on my go related, i entered the kgs tornament (gonna get trounced) and will be playing every round. my go has also improved, playing aganst a 3dan with 4 stones and losing by 20ish. Also got a new board and stones finally(katsura floor board w/ slate and shell), plus books (janice kim's how to play go mr.yangs fundamental's of go etc.etc.) ether way cheer's ![]() |

I've already said it on GD, your "how I learnt about go" story is one of the best I've heard. ![]() By the way, I've always been interested in how people teach young kids, so feel free to share your son's progress. At 1 and a half, I think he's the youngest player I've heard of so far! |
