Hello everyone. I am (very) new to Go - I was in complete ignorance of its existence until the BBC Radio 4 programme on the game that went out recently. That led me to the British Go Association's introductory pages and in fairly short order to purchasing my own inexpensive set. I have only played a handful of games - about four with a relative who was over staying recently, also new to the game, and one which I have just started intermittently playing against myself (with surprising ferocity, if very little skill). An interesting seki or seki-like situation seems to have come up in the first serious engagement of that game; maybe I'll post a sketch of it in the beginner's section at some point, to see if others agree (or, more likely, not) with my assessment of it. I don't know how much time I'll have for Go in the near future - it is low down an overlong list of priorities, unfortunately. But it seems to engender a kind of serenity in concentration that other games (I'm thinking of chess, mainly) simply don't. |

Welcome to the game and to the forum! Be sure to check-out one of the of the on-line servers like KGS or Dragon. It's a great way to get a game in when you have the time. Don't be afraid of not knowing enough or losing, there is an old proverb that says "Lose your first 100 games as quickly as possible" . Just play as many games as you can and have fun!

Thanks for the kind welcomes everyone. I haven't yet looked into online play - mainly because I don't really have time at the minute to sit down to a whole game at a stretch. I've also been spending far, far too long stuck in front of computer screens for work recently, so I wanted my non-work activity to be as far as possible non-electronic! |
