Hi,

I have been a regular reader of this forum for some time and finally signed up.

I was introduced to Go when I was around 18 years old by a friend, we played together, I once visited the local go club with him. Anyway, I did not really get the hang of it back then. I stopped playing ( I did remeber some of the cool proverbs, though). Around 20 years later I got a copy of the novel "Shibumi", and actually bought it because of the goban on the cover. Actually that book got me re-interested in go, and I started to play on KGS. I have been through some kind of cycle several times in recent years now: I start to play online, I really enjoy it, but at some point I just do not want to spend my spare time in front of my computer ( I sit in front of it during work most of the time as well). This leads to a longer break, until I start to play again. Well, go is not meant to be played in front of a computer, it is meant to be played on a tablet PC :D . So I bought an iPad, just to find out that KGS does not work on it (I never had success with the AlwaysOnPC-App, although it seems to work for others). So right now, I am sitting in front of the PC again, and I am dreaming of a Windows 8 tablet before my motivation fades again... (BTW: Anyone using a Windows tablet for KGS ? )

enough for now...

Get a Nexus 7 or 10. Great tablets and that can play on KGS and IGS. :)

My story is a lot like yours, In fact, I picked up Go again a few years ago specifically to have a hobby that does not involve being in front of a computer or TV. Is there still a Go club in your area? If so, you should go. You might find that playing face to face with people is a nice break from the computer and a good way to get more games in.

Hello Hibbs :-)

don’t give up your iPad—you can play Go with it on Pandanet IGS, there’s an app for that ;-) and also on Kaya.gs, no app needed since it’s all in HTML5.

<edit>

Tengen Go Online (iTunes Link) is the app for IGS

</edit>

Enjoy,

Tom

I have the iPad for more than one year now, but in the meantime I get really annoyed by its closed design and in a way Android is similar. Anyhow, I would use that Android tablet only for KGS and I consider that too expensive for that. A Windows 8 tablet would let me run some other software that I'd like to run...

Yes, there is a local club, and I went there occasionally and will probably do more so in the future. However: That is quite the opposite of a quick recreational game, it always costs me a full evening. Also I have to travel a lot for my job, so I'd like to play go when I am in a hotel and spend my time home with my family.

I start to feel a bit like Waldorf and Staedler... Actually I tried both IGS and later Kaya and just like KGS more. If I go to KGS and select an automatch I always get an instant game and somehow it was always a lot of waiting on IGS. Kaya may get there in the future and is on a good way once it has increased its userbase. I have not given up on the iPad, anyways, there is smartgo books, there is Igowin HD, smartgo Kifu, Igowin life. All a lot of fun, just a bit short of the real thing.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have installed it. Have only played 9x9 so far, it is much stronger than igowin.

I'm goona get a widows tablet, if my wife says yes, which I doubt.
She wants an iPad, for she's using iPhone5 64G right now.

Since there is no reason for KGS to kick Mac fans out, new application will come up pretty soon, I guess.

It does seem that way yes. Compared to the desktop version it's very weak though.
