Hi everyone, I have posted a little bit recently and I think I'd like to stick around a bit, so I will introduce myself. I have been playing go for about 1-2 years, and I studied with Guo Juan's group classes (C and B1). I used to play chess competitively before I moved overseas (Berlin). I find the way of thinking about the games is similar, which has helped me improve quickly. The moves on the board speak a conversation between the players. Learn to listen to it, use it to make a plan, and don't forget your opponent gets to move too. I say I'm about 5kyu, but I just took a 6 month break so I am a little rusty. My rating online has not converged, but at the local club I did win against a 1k player giving me 4 stones, so I think it's more or less "middle SDK". For a middle SDK player, I'm probably above average in positional judgement, and below average in shapes and contact play. Which is what you'd expect from a chess player, IMO. |

Hi guys, thanks for the friendly welcome. p2501 -- I am originally from Boston, though I've been in Berlin 5 years. Hopefully after the winter I'll get into playing serious games IRL and I'll PM you.

Welcome! Where does the name Peppernut originate? It's the literal translation for a Dutch kind of biscuit related to our 'Sinterklaas'-tradition. Seems kind of coincidental that an American German has it as his username. |

It's no coincidence, that's where it comes from. In German it's Pfeffernuss. At the time I took it as an online nickname I found literal translations to be good sources of amusing word combinations. For the English speakers, it's a gingerbread cookie. Wikipedia says that the German variant comes from the Netherlands, actually. Usually they are glazed and called "Lebkuchen" in my experience. They are common around Christmastime. and btw, it would be *her* username. |
