I wasn't actually going to say anything if you were going to go ahead and make it a 40 person tournament. Still, thanks for speaking up for me tj86430. It seems that we're almost at 48 now, so perhaps there's no need to drop the size down to 40.

Anyway, everything else topazg suggested in his page four post sounds good to me.

Guess I'll throw my hat into the ring. Sounds like it should be a good time. I will need to read back through to make sure I didn't miss anything (originally read this thread at work). Like my sig says, I think I'm some where around 8-9k (maybe?).

And I guess now is as good as ever to actually learn what the AGA rules are for scoring. Never quite understood them...

For the record, my current KGS rank is 1k, not 1d.

Speaking of KGS ratings... I don't have one! Is that okay? Can I play as '-', or should I play as '?' :?:

Make that 6k. :-?
I doubt I am 6k just because I beat a 6k with no komi... I'll play a few more games later to see if I can beat more 6 kyus.

You can use your AGA rank. KGS and AGA ranks are very close at these ranks.

I think I had an AGA rank years ago. I really only play on OGS, where I'm 5K. So, maybe that's about right. But, again, wondering if I can just leave my KGS profile with a '-'.

Well, the rank is just to get into the right group. According to the rank comparison list OGS 5k is roughly 4-5k on KGS. I don't see any problem to leave the KGS rank with a [-].

I'm not sure that comparison list is up to date. It's been my experience that the OGS kyu ranks are significantly stronger. For instance, I've been 5 kyu for a while on KGS but I'm a stable 9 kyu on OGS. Looking over profiles from the OGS player list, there are several players around OGS 4 kyu that are dan players on KGS.

Of course, doing an accurate translation may not be possible, since play styles on OGS can deviate a lot from real-time games, since they have very long thinking times and many players use the analysis board heavily and study during the game. Some people may benefit a lot from the extra resources and thinking time. Others might be good at punishing mistakes and might actually benefit from a quicker game where more mistakes are made on both sides.

As I understand it, it doesn't really matter that much. The ranks are just to setup the initial brackets. Those that win can rise to the top.

A few months ago I was 7k KGS and 9k OGS, now I'm 10k KGS and 11k OGS. Some people have the same rank at OGS and KGS, so the variation is big. The conversion list can only be a rough approximation.

On the other hand, may as well use this to see what my KGS rating would be, eh? Although not sure if just this tournament is enough to get a rating. Especially if I get immediately double-eliminated! :)
