I'm also fine with this.

I'd like to play by the japanese ruleset, because I know it. What the difference to AGA?

Fill in dame. There is no penalty for taking prisoners off the board since it uses pass stones to get area and territory scoring the same. It makes resolutions at end of game a bit easier.

Also, if white passes first, he has to pass a second time after black passes.

I like AGA rules too, but I'll be fine with anything.

Gee, I ended up in the second highest group? O.o

I'd prefer a byo-yomi of 20/5. Who's with me?

AGA rules is a good idea.

As we have exactly 40, which works just as nicely as 48 (but with one less initial group), I would like to suggest that we call this the participation for the first title tournament and I start trying to separate groups, re-poll for more detail on time control, and start the idea of getting a schedule together.

Does this sound sensible?

I believe Dusk Eagle also tried to express his interest to participate?

1. Ruleset

Do we need a poll? Does anyone feel strongly for or against any rulesets?

I'd prefer Japanese, but I can live with any other choice as well

topazg wrote:
2. Timing

I'm tempted to go for 40 minutes standard time. Because I want participation, I'm scoring the time controls as "positive votes" - "negative votes * 1.5", and get as follows:

240 + 5/5 -> 6 - 51 = -45
120 + 10/5 -> 8 - 48 = -40
90 + 10/5 -> 14 - 27 = -13
60 + 20/5 -> 25 - 15 = 10
50 + 20/5 -> 23 - 16.5 = 6.5
40 + 30/5 -> 28 - 18 = 10
30 + 30/5 -> 29 - 19.5 = 9.5

As 60, 40, and 30 all score very closely, I've gone for the middle of the 3. Does anyone strongly object to this, and will it cause some signed up players to pull out? Also, once we have agreed on the basic time, I'll open up overtime discussions.

40 minutes is fine. If we are using standard byo-yomi anything from 5x0:30 to 5x1:00 is fine, if Canadian then something like 5:00/20 - 5:00/30 or thereabouts.

3. Draw method

I'm going to pseudo seed, as there's no need for further than that because of the double elimination system. So, first round is group 1 vs group 2, but within groups each draw is random (so any one of group 1 could play any one of group 2). Similarly, the winners will be randomly ordered, and paired against a random member of group 3 for the following round. All loser's brackets will be done the same, with newcomers into the losers bracket playing people that were there in the previous round. Once the 5th group has entered, I intend on seeding the top 4 not to play until the semi finals, but other than that randomise. a) does this all make sense, and b) does this all seem reasonable?

No objection

topazg wrote:
4. Schedule

I'm envisaging allowing 2 weeks for each round?

Fine, although last week of July and first week of August I'm unavailable, should I still be playing.

Ah, so he did, I'll replace myself with him for the time being, as 41 is a silly number, and I'll wildcard in case someone drops out.

You may take my spot if you'd like. Of course, if someone else joins it is not necessary.

Nah, that's fine, unless you actively don't want to be in it - I've got plenty of things going on anyway :)

I'm happy with the proposed time, but would suggest that since the main time is relatively brisk (compared to some of the options), that we don't pick too blitz-ish a byoyomi.

I don't mind what ruleset is used. I'm most used to Japanese, but am happy to play any of the other three options too.

Yes, 30/5 or even higher would be good, I don't like suddenly playing blitz when byo-yomi starts. One question, sorry if I missed it earlier: What does a "round" consist of? Best of three games? Best of five? Seven? The Kuchinashi Tournament (in General forum) uses best of five over two weeks and it seems to work pretty well.

Augh, how did I miss this thread! I guess this is what I get for only looking at General Discussions/ 1on1 Malkovich section the majority of my visits on L19. If you need some extra participants, I will join. Although, if sign ups are over, it's unfair for those who signed up on time if you keep letting people in. Can you post a confirmation that sign ups are closed? I'm 2k on KGS.(Most likely lower, since I do not play often).

You do realize he was talking about Canadian byo-yomi, right? 30/5 means 30 stones in five minutes, which averages to 10 seconds/stone. That seems pretty blitzy to me, although I'm not used to Canadian.
