So, I'm trying to learn terran. It's not that I'm letting go of the protoss (I still return to them when I want to get serious and recover the points I let go as a terran) but I'm trying to branch out, so that I can play more than a single race. My goal is to have some experience as all the races, and I'd like that to start in bronze, since it's only going to get harder from here on out.

So I got to realizing, after almost 300 games, I've got a lot of experience as a protoss. I've recovered some games simply because I knew what I could afford to let go and focused on damage control.

And I don't have any of that as terrans. Also, the micro is much more intensive for terrans. I can hurl a crowd of stalkers, immortals, and collosi and a few phoenixes at an opponent, and be reasonably certain that I can just go back to building and pick up micro in a few minutes. Doing this with terran MMMs ends with a LOT of dead marauders.

Also, does the match making system weight what race matchups are available based on your playing record? I went several weeks without seeing more than a couple zerg, mostly terrans. I switched to Terran, and suddenly I had 4 straight zerg opponents... How does that work?

(Mutalisks are mean. So fast.)

Everybody's playing Zerg now since the last patch since they're not considered weak anymore.

I meant to ask in my last post, but got sidetracked by work, how do you guys learn a new race/build/whatever? Do you set up games against the computer and play the build until you feel good with it before playing against people? Do you get people to practice with you? I'd like to learn it like I learned protoss (Just play it in league until everything starts to click) but I don't want to ruin my skill rating again.

Also, would anyone be willing to help me refine my PvT skills? I suck vs MMM builds. I mean, really, an early marauder push makes me a sad panda.

Gotta let go with caring about your stats and rating and just use the ladder as a way to work on your builds. Ladder stats are seasonal anyways. Also, it's not the same trying to apply a BO against a computer versus a human.

And the best way to work on or against a particular strategy is to just find someone who plays Terran and would be willing to use the same strategy repeatedly. Unfortunately I don't play Terran so can't help you there.

Also, if there's only one, just one GSL match you have to watch live, it's Boxer's match against Nada. I am getting nerdchills just thinking about this matchup that's coming up in about 5 hours (3:00am Pacific).

Strange, I get the opposite impression. Marine-Marauder balls seem easy to micro because of their range and because their small size lets you pack them into a small area. Maybe you're just not having as much success with letting them fight on their own because your macro isn't as good with the new race yet.

Name changes are really bizzare, I got on and I'm like who the heck is this Junshin on my friend list??

Former star2 identity and L19 identity withheld to add drama. ;-)

I think at some point I'm going to change my name away from BillyBanana. I like to be silly, and I wanted my name to reflect that, but I now realize that I'd also like to have a name that you could imagine a caster saying excitedly and without irony "And here comes the fierce army of ______!" (Yes, I have lofty dreams.) So far I can't think of anything good. Anyone have any ideas on how to fuse silliness with wicked coolness?

I actually think BillyBanana is pretty good. You don't want to sound like you're trying too hard by putting lots of Xs or Zs in your name, or overcompensating with something like DethKilr666.

The only question is, are you a Pokemon, pharmaceutical or ancient historian?

Haha, thanks for all the ideas and reassurances. I'm surprised you guys don't think it sounds ridiculous. I've been using that same name (although it's usually BillyTheBanana, which was too long for Battle.net) on pretty much every site ever since I was in middle school (I'm now 25), but I have to imagine it must sound like "Wow we're seeing some very intelligent and creative play from KumquatKarl today!" Well, maybe I'll just stick with it and see what happens.

Incidentally, yoyoma, I know who Junshin is, by the amazing power of "Set Friend Note", but if you're trying to be secretive I won't spoil it. :)

One of the players in GSL season 2 is "ChickenCombo". I believe Tastosis described it as "the best name ever". So silly isn't bad, per se. On the other hand, BabyByeBye is pretty terrible...

Nope. I did pretty badly at DC (lost to nony and nesh. Who is nesh? Exactly :( )and had to do a decent amount of school in between the two events so it wasn't really worth going to dallas.

I probably will be going to go congress next year, though!

Suddenly, I wish I had checked this forum on my four days off. I played a HUGE amount of sc2, got so frustrated I nearly quit (ever had one of those days where nothing you do wins, no matter how well you scout?)

My latest crushing defeat is against protoss. They went massive cannons (I mean, I ran into a line of 10 cannons with my early zealot rush) and then transitioned into upgraded void rays. How do people find the money for this sort of thing? If I spend that much on cannons, there's no way I'm getting my 3rd expansion, much less upgrading into a massive army of void rays. It just boggles my mind.

I've been focusing on a 3 gate zealot push, with delayed warp gates and a balanced economy (9p 12 gate, 15 gate, 16 z, 16p, 18 core, 20 gate, get warp gates, and pump out units, while constantly producing workers) and this build works fairly well, unless I run into early void rays/mutalisks. Mutas are easier to deal with than void rays, but finding an army of upgraded mutas hurts my feelings some. After about 6 zealots and 2 stalkers, I push out, and make an attack. If I do well, I turn to warp gates and immortals, if I do poorly, I generally need to transition into an expo, 3 stargates, and stalkers.

But if they go early aggressive air.. well.. I'm just toast.
The downside is I get my expo fairly late. The upside is that I'm generally able to beat down slower players, and if I time my first push right, I can beat void rays to the field. Larger maps, with long rush distances, this is more of a problem.

Mostly, this build works well against zerg, OK against terrans, and is crap against protoss.

Still, I'd love to play against you, Time, and learn whatever I can. I'll add you as soon as I get home.

Thanks,
CSam
