This Sunday night my local low temperature is predicted to reach 12 F and 14 F on Monday night. According to an article at Bloomberg News (http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-11-0 ... -snow.html), there may be a connection between predictions for a cold winter over the Eastern U.S. and Europe with the near-record Siberian snow cover this October, which is the worst since 1976. (This record keeping only goes back to 1967, however.) It makes me shudder, though, when I recall the three worst winters in my life (not that last winter was balmy!): Chicagoland 1976-77, 77-78, and 78-79. That sounds warm. I also remember being in Chicago in winter, although not that long ago. And there were many whole weeks when I lived in Minnesota where is never got above zero. |

It has been cold here too. It got so cold yesterday that I had to wear a long sleeved shirt. It was so cold yesterday that the female elephant seals are staying up on the beach.

You'd expect winter to be a lot warmer with global warming. |

Do you really think that sounds warm?! For mid-November? You are in Virginia, right? Minnesota was one of the graduate schools that accepted me, but I wanted to get away from Midwestern winters. (I had a 3-year full scholarship grant from the DOD to attend any graduate school of my choice, so I also turned down a scholarship offer from Northwestern in order to head to warmer climes. In retrospect, being cooped up inside instead of spending so much time in the sun and water would have forced me to produce more math, but I would have met a lot fewer females! ![]() ![]() SOME WEATHER RECORDS SET DURING THOSE WINTERS AT CHICAGO * Longest streak of days below 32(degrees): 43 days from Dec. 28, 1976, to Feb. 8, 1977 * Longest streak of days with snow cover: 100 days from Nov. 26, 1978, to March 5, 1979 * Greatest snow depth at Chicago: 29 inches on Jan. 14, 1979 * Lake Michigan almost frozen over: 1978-79 (more than 90 percent ice cover in 1976-77) Quote: It has been cold here too.
